Northrop Grumman's Mission Systems is seeking a Senior Principal Embedded Software Engineer to join our team in Sykesville, MD.

The engineer hired will join our team of qualified, diverse individuals in the Power & Control Systems group. We work across Northrop Grumman sites, business sectors, and the power management industry collaborating with our customers to engineer and produce leading-edge control and energy management systems for modern naval warfare. We offer a dynamic work environment providing the highest level of engineering, product design and system support for our nation's aircraft carriers and submarines, as well as other naval and ground-based system platforms. This position will work a 9/80 schedule, with every other Friday off. This position is 100% onsite and cannot accommodate telecommute work.

Job Responsibilities:

The engineer hired will be responsible for implementing software features for disparate hardware components and in a near real-time control system. The work will involve analysis, design, development, integration, debugging, and verification of software and drivers in C/C++. This person will collaborate with system knowledgeable engineers to develop flow down software requirements, technical specifications, and design documentation. This person will need support risk identification, suggest mitigation, track defects and develop resolutions, and report status. The person will also develop and execute unit tests and develop test plans and procedures for their work. Experience with the VxWorks operating system is a big plus.

Travel: Occasionally, typically not more than 10%

Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering or another related STEM discipline with a minimum of 8 years of embedded software experience, or Master of Science in Computer Engineering or another related STEM discipline with a minimum of 6 years of embedded software experience, or PhD with a minimum of 4 years of embedded software experience,
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work in small teams;
  • U.S. Citizen with an active Government Secret clearance or higher
  • Proficiency in C and C++ programming languages;
  • Proficiency with Object Oriented Design Principles;
  • Experience with VxWorks operating system or other Real-time Operating Systems (RTOS);
  • Experience with full software lifecycle i.e. requirements analysis, design, implementation, integration, debug, and maintenance;
  • Ability to work in a structured process-driven software development environment including peer reviews of all work products, use of revision control system, defect tracking, and software release best practices.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Proficiency with system debugging and root cause analysis;
  • Proficiency with DOORS or other requirements management tool and the ability to write, decompose, and manage system and software requirements;
  • Proficiency with Cameo or similar UML/SysML tool and the ability to read and author software design models;
  • Experience with system level integration, hardware interfacing, system controls;
  • Experience with naval systems integration and network analysis tools;
  • Experience in system architecture development and system design;
  • Ability to perform and document trade study analyses and reports;
  • Ability to author and present technical materials to support of internal and customer briefings;
  • Ability to develop and modify test plans and procedures;
  • Experience supporting system Design Verification Testing (DVT) and System Acceptance Testing (SAT).

Primary Level Salary Range: $135,800.00 - $203,600.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
