What Your Job Will Be LikeWe are seeking a highly motivated R&D Electrical Engineer to join our team as an Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASIC's) Product Realization Team Lead. Our team executes design, development, qualification, and manufacturing activities associated with all new as well as legacy weapons systems. Your principal responsibility will be leading a team of engineers and other professionals in the realization (design through qualification) of ASICs and other CMOS microelectronics for Nuclear Weapon (NW) modernization programs. These microelectronics are the primary enabler of agile, responsive weapon development and future advanced system functionality.
The ASIC Production Agency (PA) PRT is responsible for ASIC Product Realization for the W80-4, W80-5, W87-1, W76-1/2 and W93 programs.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
- Provide leadership to ensure the success of the ASIC Product Realization Team (PRT). Ensure timely and effective communication between the PRT, the Major Component (MC) and Systems customers, and management as the primary point-of-contact (POC) for the PRT.
- Participate in the product realization process, including early engagement in the development phase to define, validate, and clarify requirements for ASICs destined for use in nuclear weapons.
- Coordinate with other organizations to negotiate PRT requirements and work.
- Identify the resources required to support PRT objectives and collaborate with customers and PRT members to establish work scope and budget.
- Manage resources to ensure on-time, on-budget deliveries meeting quality objectives.
- Work with our financial team to understand and track costs and schedule progress.
- Work with the PRT to develop comprehensive design, verification, qualification, and production strategies and effectively document and communicate the resulting plans.
- Write reports, work issues, document design history, and present results/findings to various partners including peer engineers, management, and internal/external customers.
- Manage the product definition (drawings, specifications, etc.) and analyze data throughout the product life cycle to demonstrate sustained compliance with customer requirements.
- Anticipate and manage risks, identify viable alternatives, and lead the technical evaluations and decision-making process.
- Employ quality management systems and defect prevention techniques throughout the complete realization process (e.g. design for manufacturing, mistake proofing, etc.).
- Team with peer ASIC PRT Leads on other programs for both the Design Agency and Production Agency to address cross-cutting topics of interest.
- Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of engineers and domain specialists to successfully investigate anomalies and resolve system-related issues.
- Engage and team with numerous groups at SNL (e.g. component engineers, surveillance, systems engineering, nuclear safety, technical subject matter experts) as well as external agencies such as the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and Kansas City National Security Campus (KCNSC).
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant will be required to work onsite at least 75% of the time.
Salary Range$117,500 - $235,700
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
Qualifications We Require- Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline and five (5) years of directly relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance.
Qualifications We DesireThe ideal R&D S&E Systems Engineer candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:
- Graduate degree in Engineering or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation).
- Experience working with Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE) laboratories and plants including Pantex, Kansas City National Security Campus (KCNSC), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), and Kansas City National Security Campus/New Mexico Operations (KCNSC/NMO).
- Experience working on engineering design, qualification, production, or related modeling/simulation projects.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams.

About Our TeamThe Post-Fab Product Realization department is responsible for development and stewardship of robust systems that deliver microelectronics for national security applications. The technology portfolio includes process development and high-rigor production for ceramic packaging and plastic ball grid array packaging for Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICS) as well as Read-Out Integrated Circuits (RIOC). The organization is part of the Post Fab Technologies Group within Sandia's Microsystems Engineering, Science, and Applications Center (MESA) and partners closely with the Integrated Circuit design, fabrication, and Advanced Packaging/Integration department to establish capabilities that meet the unique requirements of our national security customers.
