Siemens is seeking a Senior Protection, Automation & Real-Time Simulation Engineer to support the development and growth of advanced power system solutions for utility, industrial, microgrid, renewable energy, and data center applications.
This role will be responsible for establishing and expanding Siemens' real-time digital simulation capabilities, supporting hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing, system validation, customer demonstrations, engineering studies, and technical solution development.
The successful candidate will combine strong expertise in protection and automation systems with practical experience in power system modeling, testing, and simulation. The position will work closely with customers, sales teams, product management, engineering organizations, and technology partners to develop and validate complex power system solutions.
We are looking for a Senior Power System Simulation & Automation Engineer. This position will be based in Wendell, North Carolina. This role may be hired at different levels depending on the selected candidate's education, experience, skills, and business need. Compensation will align with the level at which the position is filled.
Key Responsibilities: Real-Time Simulation & Laboratory Development - Lead the development and operation of Siemens' Real-Time Digital Simulation (RTDS) capability.
- Develop, maintain, and standardize reusable real-time power system models and simulation libraries for utility, industrial, renewable, microgrid, and data center applications.
- Design, build, maintain, and troubleshoot Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing environments.
- Develop simulation methodologies, laboratory standards, and testing procedures.
- Establish, maintain, and expand simulation laboratory infrastructure, including test racks, networking equipment, engineering workstations, and associated assets.
Protection, Automation & Control Solutions - Support development, validation, troubleshooting, and performance evaluation of protection, automation, and power system control solutions.
- Participate in functional testing, integration testing, and customer acceptance activities.
Customer & Business Support - Support strategic customer engagements involving advanced power system studies and validation.
- Participate in customer workshops, technical presentations, demonstrations, and proof-of-concept activities.
- Support proposal development, scope definition, effort estimation, and technical risk assessments.
- Collaborate with sales and business development teams to identify emerging opportunities.
- Provide technical leadership for projects involving simulation, testing, and validation activities.
Training & Knowledge Development - Train internal engineering teams on RTDS, HIL testing, protection systems, automation systems, and microgrid technologies.
- Develop technical training materials and best practices.
- Mentor engineers in power systems, simulation, protection, and automation disciplines.
Cross-Functional Collaboration - Work closely with product management, R&D, engineering, and other internal stakeholders.
- Collaborate with external technology partners, customers, universities, and research organizations.
- Support development of future capabilities related to power system digitalization, advanced controls, and grid modernization.

- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, or closely related discipline.
- Five (5) years of directly related experience, to include:
- Strong understanding of electrical power systems and system studies.
- Experience with power system protection and automation applications.
- Experience applying protection relays and automation systems in utility, industrial, renewable energy, microgrid, or data center environments.
- Experience with power system modeling and simulation tools.
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.
- Excellent communication and customer-facing skills.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating across multiple organizations.
Preferred Qualifications: - Experience with Real-Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) platforms.
- Experience with Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing methodologies.
- Experience with protection and automation applications utilizing SIPROTEC and SICAM products.
- Experience supporting microgrid, renewable integration, battery energy storage, or grid modernization projects.
- Experience performing factory testing, site testing, commissioning support, or validation studies.
- Experience developing customer demonstrations and proof-of-concept environments.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license, advanced degree, or relevant industry certifications

The pay range for this position is $83,966 - $143,942 annually with a target incentive of 5% of the base salary. The actual wage offered may be lower or higher depending on budget and candidate experience, knowledge, skills, qualifications, and premium geographic location.
