This role goes beyond development; it is a technical leadership and trusted advisor position that sets standards, mentors the team, and accelerates GroupHEALTH's journey toward a data driven culture. Through deep expertise in Power BI, Microsoft Fabric, and semantic modelling, the Senior Power BI Developer will enable evidence-based decisions at every level of the organization.

This is a hybrid role based out of our Surrey, BC office, working a combination of days in office and at home.

What to Expect in Your First 3 Months

First 30 Days:

  • Complete a thorough assessment of the current Power BI environment, including the reporting product catalogue, semantic model quality, data governance practices, adoption rates, and reporting pain points.
  • Identify the top high-value enhancement opportunities and areas of duplication or manual effort to eliminate.

First 60 Days:

  • Define and document Power BI and Microsoft Fabric development standards covering semantic model design, DAX conventions, report UI/UX, performance optimization, and deployment practices.
  • Build relationships with stakeholders across Finance, Actuarial, Operations, and Sales, and produce a prioritized reporting roadmap.

First 90 Days:

  • Deliver a significant reporting product or major dashboard enhancement that supports a key business decision.
  • Establish adoption baselines for Power BI usage and self-service analytics, and standardize KPI definitions for at least one major business area within the certified semantic model.

What You'll Do

Reporting Product Development

  • Lead the design, development, deployment, and support of enterprise reporting and analytics products using Microsoft Power BI and Microsoft Fabric
  • Design executive dashboards, operational scorecards, KPI frameworks, and advanced analytical reporting solutions for GroupHEALTH's leadership and plan sponsors
  • Develop advanced DAX calculations, measures, calculated tables, and optimized reporting models
  • Ensure high standards for report performance, usability, UI/UX, accessibility, maintainability, and data quality across all reporting products

Semantic Model Governance

  • Design, develop, and maintain enterprise semantic models that enable scalable and trusted self-service analytics across all GroupHEALTH business units
  • Own the certified Power BI dataset layer, the single trusted source that all reports across the organization consume
  • Partner with the Data Architect on model alignment to the Microsoft Fabric platform and enterprise data architecture
  • Define and enforce KPI standards, governance practices, and semantic model documentation

Reporting Product Catalogue Management

  • Manage the reporting product catalogue, including prioritization, lifecycle management, stakeholder alignment, and retirement of obsolete assets
  • Maintain a prioritized analytics product backlog aligned to organizational goals
  • Identify and consolidate duplicate reporting efforts and reduce manual reporting processes across the organization

Stakeholder Partnership and Adoption

  • Partner with business stakeholders across Finance, Actuarial, Operations, and Sales to translate objectives into reporting products
  • Facilitate requirements gathering workshops, stakeholder reviews, and dashboard demonstrations
  • Drive and monitor adoption of Power BI reporting products and data-driven decision-making practices across leadership and business teams
  • Promote data literacy and self-service analytics capability across business teams

Technical Leadership and Mentorship

  • Provide mentorship, coaching, and technical leadership to the BI Developer, Data Analysts, and reporting professionals
  • Establish and promote Power BI and Fabric development standards and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Act as the organization's trusted subject matter expert for Power BI, Microsoft Fabric, and reporting product development
  • Participate in agile delivery sprint planning, backlog refinement, estimation, demos, and retrospectives

Documentation and Governance

  • Maintain technical documentation, reporting inventories, governance artifacts, and development standards
  • Ensure all reporting solutions align with established KPI definitions and organizational performance measurement frameworks
  • Support data governance, metadata management, and data cataloguing practices in partnership with the Data Governance & MDM Analyst

What We're Looking For

  • Demonstrated experience designing and maintaining enterprise semantic models
  • Experience working with Microsoft Fabric, Data Warehousing, Lakehouse, and modern analytics architecture
  • Strong experience with SQL, relational databases, star schemas, and dimensional modelling
  • Demonstrated experience developing executive-level dashboards and operational reporting solutions
  • Experience working within Agile/Scrum delivery environments
  • Experience mentoring technical resources and leading technical decision-making without direct authority
  • Demonstrated experience facilitating discussions with senior leaders and translating business requirements into technical solutions

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience within insurance, group benefits, financial services, or other regulated environments
  • Experience supporting enterprise KPI frameworks and performance management programmes
  • Experience with Power BI Embedded for external client portal development
  • Experience with wireframing tools such as Figma or Balsamiq
  • Microsoft Power BI (PL-300) and/or Fabric certifications strongly preferred
  • Experience in UI/UX design, graphic design or other areas for analytical visual storytelling

Critical Competencies

You will succeed in this role if you are:

  • A Business Utilization Focused Professional - You understand that a report nobody uses has zero value regardless of its technical quality, and you design for adoption from the first conversation.
  • A Communicator - You translate technical complexity into business language that drives decisions, and you communicate clearly without being verbose.
  • A Curious and Innovative Thinker - You actively monitor the Power BI and Fabric roadmap, challenge existing processes constructively, and follow through on new ideas rather than leaving them as recommendations.
  • An Expert in Job Knowledge - You bring deep, current expertise in Power BI, Microsoft Fabric, DAX, and semantic modelling, and you work independently on complex technical problems.
  • A Organized and Strategic Planner - You manage a reporting product backlog with discipline, prioritize ruthlessly, and operate effectively in a hybrid environment.
  • A Team Player - You actively contribute to team ceremonies, share technical knowledge openly, and build the capability of colleagues around you.
