Position Summary

This highly technical role has the unique opportunity to possess agency when determining loan qualifications, providing recommendations in a collaborative, receptive environment. As a subject-matter expert, your manager at HSFCU serves as a partner and resource as you continue to refine your expertise and contribute to high-quality lending decisions.

In the Senior Mortgage Loan Underwriter Professional position, you will be responsible for reviewing and underwriting consumer, home equity and mortgage loans. The Senior Mortgage Loan Underwriter Professional identifies, analyzes, and evaluates loan risks and compensating factors, and ensures the marketability of closed loans and the safety of credit union assets. You will also be the primary individual who approves, suspends, or denies loan applications and provides support to Loan Personnel. Your expertise will ensure loans are approved within the terms of the credit union's standards and procedures, regulatory underwriting guidelines, and other secondary market requirements.

This position is in-office at our HSFCU Headquarters in Downtown Honolulu.

Base Annual Salary Range: $79,100 - $101,745 per year

The posted range reflects the anticipated base pay for this position, with final compensation determined based on experience, skills, and internal equity.

Essential Duties:
  • Ensures that all department functions are performed in accordance with established credit union policies and procedures and governmental regulations.
  • Keeps informed on credit union policies and procedures affecting job duties and responsibilities, and adheres to governmental rules and regulations.
  • Resolves moderately complex issues, compares alternative solutions and decides on appropriate approach.
  • Evaluates and assesses the capacity and collateral of consumer and mortgage loans.
  • Reviews appraisals and ensures risks are appropriate and meets guidelines for applicable loan types.
  • Evaluates applicant's employment history. Ensures the probability of continued employment is good. Verifies employment history. Assesses overtime, bonuses, and commissions used to qualify. Analyzes tax returns and balance sheets of self-employed applicants.
  • Completes all underwriting functions in accordance with various credit union program requirements and related legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensures all lending conditions have been satisfactorily met prior to closing. Ensures the marketability of closed loans and the safety of credit union assets

Minimum Qualifications and Experience
  • Either:
    • Bachelor's degree
      OR
    • 5+ years as a Senior Mortgage Loan Underwriter or Underwriter with full authority.
  • Understanding of related legal and regulatory standards, and required loan documentation.
  • Knowledge of consumer and residential lending practices.
  • Sound credit judgement.
  • Able to use all related computer applications.
  • Excellent communication and public relations skills.
  • Strong math abilities, analytical, and financial skills.
  • Good organizational skills and attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Business or related field.
  • Prior work experience in a credit union or financial institution.
  • Knowledge of credit union loan services, policies, and procedures.
  • Familiarity with loan origination systems (LOS) and underwriting platforms (e.g., Encompass, MeridianLink, etc.).
  • Able to operate required computer applications including Microsoft Word and Excel typewriter, 10-key, and other basic business machines.
