Job Description

The Sr. Mechanical Engineer serves as a key technical contributor within the engineering team, responsible for the design and execution of bulk material handling projects. This role leads and supports mechanical engineering efforts across the full project lifecycle-from concept and basic design through detailed engineering, fabrication, installation, and commissioning. The position places a strong emphasis on conveyor systems and associated mechanical equipment, ensuring solutions are efficient, reliable, and aligned with project requirements, industry standards, and operational performance expectations.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Perform mechanical engineering activities in accordance with sound engineering principles, project requirements, and applicable codes and standards
  • Develop and review mechanical calculations, equipment sizing, specifications, datasheets, and design documentation for material handling systems
  • Lead the mechanical design of conveyor systems, including belt conveyors, feeders, pulleys, drives, take-ups, and transfer points
  • Review and approve mechanical layouts and detailed drawings prepared by designers and drafters
  • Ensure all mechanical deliverables meet project scope, schedule, budget, quality, and safety requirements
  • Collaborate with clients, suppliers, and third-party engineering partners to support project execution
  • Evaluate supplier proposals, technical documentation, and drawings to ensure compliance with specifications
  • Support procurement, fabrication, pre-assembly, installation, and commissioning activities
  • Provide technical support during construction, troubleshooting, and commissioning phases
  • Conduct root cause analysis and implement corrective actions to resolve technical issues
  • Mentor junior engineers and designers, fostering knowledge sharing and continuous improvement
  • Promote safe, reliable, and maintainable design practices across all projects
  • Perform additional duties as assigned


Qualifications

Requirements / Skills / Abilities:
  • Bachelor's or master's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • APEGA P.Eng. designation. Other Canadian or USA Professional Engineering designations would be an asset.
  • 10+ years of experience as a Mechanical Engineer in mining, aggregates, cement, industrial minerals, or bulk material handling projects.
  • Strong experience with material handling systems, with significant conveyor engineering experience strongly preferred.
  • Solid understanding of mechanical system design, machine components, and project execution workflows.
  • Familiarity with applicable industry standards (e.g., CEMA, DIN, ISO) is an asset.
  • Demonstrated experience working in multidisciplinary and multi-location project environments.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical decision-making skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Highly organized, self-motivated, and capable of managing multiple priorities.
  • Willing and able to travel to suppliers and project sites as required.
