Job Title: Senior Manager, Tax

Department: Finance

FLSA: Salary (Exempt)

Revision Date: 08/2026

The Role and Why It's Important

As Senior Manager of Tax at Hy-Vee, you lead both the indirect tax and corporate income tax functions for a large, multi-state retail operation, staying close to the technical work while managing and developing the team responsible for day-to-day tax compliance and administration. You bring deep tax expertise across sales and use tax, excise tax, and multi-state corporate income tax, and you apply that expertise hands-on to ensure Hy-Vee meets its obligations accurately, on time, and in full compliance with applicable law. Your work protects the company from risk, supports sound financial decision-making, and ensures leadership has a clear, accurate picture of our tax position at all times. If you're a seasoned tax professional who thrives in a complex, multi-state environment, enjoys leading a team while staying engaged in the technical details, and is energized by the breadth of a full-spectrum tax function, this role is a strong fit.

What You'll Do
  • Oversee and actively participate in the preparation, review, and filing of indirect tax returns, including sales and use tax, excise tax, and other applicable state and local taxes across all operating jurisdictions.
  • Manage and develop the indirect tax team, providing day-to-day direction, technical guidance, and coaching to support accurate and efficient tax administration.
  • Serve as the primary liaison between Hy-Vee and its third-party tax provider on all tax-related matters.
  • Maintain and reconcile tax-related balance sheet accounts, ensuring accurate tax accruals and deferred taxes are reflected in the company's financial statements.
  • Support the annual income tax provision process, including deferred tax analysis and effective tax rate calculations.
  • Calculate and schedule quarterly income tax payments to appropriate taxing jurisdictions and intercompany payments amongst Hy-Vee's subsidiaries.
  • Manage tax audits and notices from state and local taxing authorities, including organizing documentation, coordinating responses, and working with external advisors as needed.
  • Partner with Finance, Legal, Operations, and IT to ensure tax considerations are integrated into business decisions, system changes, and new initiatives.
  • Monitor changes in federal, state, and local tax law across all operating jurisdictions, assessing the impact on Hy-Vee's tax positions and recommending appropriate responses.
  • Identify and implement tax planning opportunities and process improvements that reduce tax liability, improve compliance efficiency, and strengthen internal controls.
  • Maintain confidentiality with all tax, financial, and company information.

Your Skills
  • Commitment to the Hy-Vee mission and a willingness to promote the values of the company.
  • Deep technical expertise in both indirect tax (sales and use tax, excise tax) and multi-state corporate income tax, with hands-on experience managing compliance across a large, multi-state operation.
  • Strong knowledge of state and local tax law, nexus principles, and tax research methodology.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and develop a tax team while remaining actively engaged in the technical details of compliance and planning work.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex tax issues and translate findings into clear recommendations for Finance and leadership.
  • Experience managing tax audits and responding to notices from state and local taxing authorities.
  • Solid understanding of tax accounting principles, including ASC 740 income tax provision and deferred tax analysis.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex tax matters clearly to non-tax stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple filing deadlines and priorities simultaneously.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, standard tax compliance and research tools, and SAP or other ERP systems.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality as it pertains to tax, financial, and company information.
