Job Posting:

Position Summary:

The Senior Manager - Learning Experience Design provides strategic leadership in AI-enabled instructional design and modern learning approaches to create scalable, learner-centered experiences. This role focuses on how learning is designed, delivered, and experienced. Key focus areas include using AI, digital tools, and evolving methodologies to improve learner engagement, speed to capability, and business impact.

This role partners closely with Academy leaders, HR Technology, instructional design teams, and business stakeholders to evolve the learning experience ecosystem and modernize how learning content is developed and consumed. While collaborating with enterprise AI and HR Operations teams where appropriate, this role is specifically focused on the application of AI within learning design, content strategy, and learner experience — not broader enterprise AI product development or ownership of LMS administration.

Location:

This role is approved for remote work across the United States or out of Ferguson's corporate offices in Newport News, VA, according to company policy.

Responsibilities:

AI Strategy & Learning Experience

  • Develop and implement a strategy for using AI (including generative and agentic AI) to enhance learning delivery, content design, and effectiveness
  • Drive the shift from traditional “destination learning” to contextual, in-workflow learning experiences (e.g., embedded in CRM, collaboration tools, etc)
  • Define how learning platforms, AI tools, and content are orchestrated to deliver a seamless, intuitive learner experience
  • Partner with HR Technology / HRIS / HR Ops to ensure systems are connected, scalable, and aligned to deliver an optimized learner experience
  • Establish governance for learning tools, content platforms, and AI-enabled solutions

AI-Enabled Learning Design & Delivery

  • Translate emerging AI capabilities into practical use cases that improve how learning is created, delivered, and applied on the job
  • Lead the adoption of AI-enabled workflows that improve speed, consistency, and quality of learning outputs
  • Enable teams to effectively use AI in analysis, design, and development of learning experiences
  • Identify and scale repeatable approaches that embed learning into day-to-day work and reduce reliance on formal training

Modernization of Learning Design

  • Lead the evolution from traditional instructional design to modern learning experience design
  • Establish standards for performance-based, learner-centered design and agile development
  • Define how different modalities (in-person, virtual, on-demand, embedded) are used to drive outcomes
  • Improve design quality and throughput through consultation, design thinking, modern templates, tools, and workflows
  • Coach and upskill teams on how to act as learning partners, driving contemporary and AI-enabled practices

Build / Buy / Borrow Strategy

  • Create frameworks for when to build, buy, curate, or outsource learning solutions
  • Assess vendors and partners for strategic fit, cost, speed, and quality
  • Manage key vendor relationships aligned to learning experience and content strategy

Measurement and Continuous Improvement

  • Define success metrics (learner experience, adoption, speed, business application, efficiency)
  • Work with Academy Impact & Insights counterpart to leverage data and stakeholder feedback to continuously improve learning effectiveness
  • Provide clear, executive-ready updates on progress and impact

Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of experience in learning and development, instructional design, digital learning, or related roles.
  • Strong understanding of instructional design, learning experience design, and performance-based learning.
  • Experience applying AI/GenAI to learning (content creation, personalization, workflow integration).
  • Ability to lead cross-functional initiatives and influence across technical and business stakeholders.
  • Working knowledge of LMS/LXP platforms, with focus on optimizing usage vs. administration.
  • Strong communication and ability to translate complex concepts into practical solutions.
  • Strong leadership skills.
  • Ability to travel occasionally to corporate offices or training opportunities.
