Job Summary

The Senior Manager, Design is a key role within the Brand and Marketing Communications (BMC) department, responsible for elevating the visual standard of the IEEE brand globally. This role oversees the art direction for the enterprise, ensuring that every touchpoint-from digital products to global events-reflects a modern, cohesive, and strategic brand identity. The Senior Manager, Design will bridge the gap between creative strategy and technical execution, designing themselves as well as overseeing an internal creative studio and agencies in building a scalable design ecosystem for IEEE and its sub-brands.

This position will manage two direct reports. While our team works a hybrid schedule, we will consider fully remote candidates who are open to travel to the Piscataway, NJ office.

Key Responsibilities

CREATIVE DIRECTION & VISUAL STRATEGY

  • Brand Evolution: Lead the visual execution of the refreshed IEEE brand identity, applying and guiding the execution across the IEEE ecosystem (masterbrand + sub-brands).
  • Design Excellence: Act as a player-coach, providing creative direction to internal and external designers while remaining hands-on in the day-to-day design execution to ensure all creative output is modern, impactful, and aligned with IEEE's identity.
  • One IEEE Events: Drives the visual design strategy for high-profile "One IEEE" events, ensuring a premium and consistent brand experience.


DESIGN SYSTEMS & GOVERNANCE

  • Scalable Systems: Develop and manage a comprehensive enterprise design system (UI/UX, digital, and print) that enables consistency and efficiency across the organization, balancing the needs of the masterbrand and sub-brands.
  • Brand Tools & Assets: Manage the brand portal, including the creation and dissemination of brand tools and asset templates throughout IEEE.
  • Brand Alignment: Partner with the Marketing Services team to oversee the creative integrity of over 500+ projects annually, ensuring they meet the IEEE design standards

INNOVATION & TEAM LEADERSHIP

  • Creative Leadership: Mentor and lead an internal team of designers, provide creative guidance to other designers across the ecosystem, and help manage a curated roster of external creative agencies and vendors.
  • AI & Workflow Optimization: Explore and help evaluate AI-powered creative tools and processes for asset generation and content versioning.
  • Transformation: Support the department's pivot to a modern brand engine by fostering a culture of innovation and "test and learn" creative thinking.


Travel Information

  • Up to 10% Domestic and International


Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience Graphic Design, Visual Communications, Fine Arts, or a related field required
  • Master's or other advanced degree preferred


Work Experience

  • 10+ years of experience in creative direction, design leadership, or brand identity management, preferably in-house or at an agency required


Skills and Requirements

  • LEADERSHIP: Proven track record of managing multi-disciplinary design teams and external partners through complex organizational transformations.
  • STRATEGY: Deep expertise in building and executing on design systems in complex, multi-stakeholder organizations.
  • TECHNICAL: Expert-level mastery of Adobe Creative Cloud, Figma, and Canva Enterprise. Familiarity with digital asset management (DAM) and AI creative workflows.
