Job Description Reporting to the Vice President, Claims, the Senior Technical Manager Accident Benefits & Bodily Injury contributes to delivering the objectives of the business, providing technical leadership to the Accident Benefits (AB) and Bodily Injury (BI) Claims units.
Accountable for the fiscal management and performance of indemnity spend in the region, including claims resolution policies, regulatory compliance, coverage interpretation, case reserving policies, oversight on arbitration and mediation protocols and strategies, and the supervision of major claims. Emphasis is placed on delivering a superior claimant experience balanced with the need to protect shareholder value.
The Senior Technical Manager AB & BI works closely with the AB & BI regional and national claims management, as well as other specialized and support teams to:
- Establish policies and procedures governing the establishment and management of case reserves and provide strategic direction on development of organizational policies and procedures for claims handling
- Proactively monitor legislative and jurisprudence changes and competitor policies and practices and communicate changes within department and to appropriate stakeholders
- Interpret case law and applicable jurisprudence and ensure all handling procedures are appropriate and reserves adjusted accordingly
- Make recommendations on precedent setting mediations and arbitrations and exercise sound judgment in non-routine and complex situations
- Develop claims handling strategies that align with TDI Business Objectives and TD's Risk appetite
- Proactively monitor market changes and competitor offerings, assess current and future client needs and evaluate unit effectiveness in responding to changing conditions
- Provide feedback and strategy to improve front line awareness of impacts on claims handling practices and improvement of the claimant experience
- Lead and provide strategic leadership in development and execution of:
- Protocols and strategies for resolution of claims and related disputes with Operations and on major claims
- Arbitration, mediation and resolution strategies and protocols, including introducing ways to leverage the operations and front line
- Oversight on major claims and large losses
- Develop and encourage change and innovation at all levels of the unit and foster continuous improvement and new ideas adopting best practices
- Ensure sound business relationships for line of business with legal services suppliers, meet regularly to optimize knowledge transfer, conduct regular qualitative reviews of legal files
- Work closely with the actuarial department to examine trends and predictors that may have a financial impact on case reserves
- Participate in industry & external committees overseeing case reserving and settlement of major claims, trials and appeals
- Participate in annual and regular budget planning activities

- Partner with regional and national claims leaders, legal partners, actuarial teams, and support functions.
- Strengthen relationships with legal service providers and support qualitative reviews of legal files.
- Identify trends and predictors that may impact reserves, claims outcomes, and operational performance.
- Promote continuous improvement, innovation, best practices, and frontline awareness of claims impacts.
- Ensure regulatory compliance and participate in budget planning, industry committees, and external forums.
