Position Overview

The Senior Claims Litigation provides expert legal and litigation support to Claims, other Munich Re Canada business units, and external clients. This role is responsible for delivering high quality legal advice, overseeing litigated claims, conducting litigation audits, identifying legal trends, and supporting sound claims decision making to mitigate risk and achieve optimal outcomes.

Your Role:

Litigated Claims Management
  • Manage and oversee a portfolio of litigated claims, ensuring timely review, documentation, and follow up in accordance with established service standards.
  • Provide settlement concurrence, second opinions, and strategic guidance to clients and external business partners on appeals, settlement negotiations, legal billings, and regulatory developments.
  • Conduct comprehensive litigation audits and follow ups, producing clear, professional reports identifying strengths, risks, trends, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Maintain strong, value-added partnerships with clients, counsel, and other external service providers.
  • Enhance and sustain effective internal litigated claims management and record keeping practices to minimize risk exposure, contain costs, and support optimal claim resolutions.
  • Regularly communicate significant legal, regulatory, industry, or client specific developments to management and internal stakeholders.


Legal Opinion & Advisory
  • Provide clear, concise, and actionable legal opinion advice to the Claims Department, including guidance on:
    • Contentious and complex claims
    • Policy rescissions
    • Claims practices and procedures
    • Benefit interpretation
    • Claims settlements
    • Non treaty errors
    • Ex gratia requests
  • Deliver forward looking research and technical expertise on treaty, product, contract, underwriting, privacy, and corporate legal matters to internal and external partners.
  • Compile and analyze legal and litigation trends annually for presentation to Senior Management.
  • When required, provide subject matter expertise and support on complex claims adjudication matters.


Education & Training
  • Develop and deliver education through presentations, discussions, and written materials on insurance and litigation related legal topics.
  • Design and facilitate client training sessions that promote best practices in the management of litigated claims, tailored to client needs and delivered in a timely and professional manner.


Your Profile:
  • Law degree with active membership in the Ontario or Quebec Bar.
  • 7+ years of experience in Disability, Life gained within an insurance company and/or law firm.
  • Experience in Critical Illness claims litigation would be considered an assist
  • Demonstrated experience managing a dedicated litigated claims portfolio, including participation in examinations for discovery and defense of litigated matters.
  • Bilingual (English/French).
  • Excellent analytical, influencing, negotiation, problem solving, communication, and collaboration skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including strong working knowledge of Excel.
