Position Overview

Munich Re Canada is seeking a senior, bilingual, client-focused underwriting consultant who will bring strong technical judgment, curiosity and a passion for underwriting to our team.

This role combines production underwriting for our facultative business with client partnership, team mentoring and contributions to modernization initiatives that support consistent, efficient and forward-looking underwriting outcomes. The successful candidates will be comfortable applying traditional underwriting expertise while embracing new tools, evidence sources and digital capabilities that help advance our strategy as a leading reinsurer.

Your Role:
  • Assess and underwrite complex Life & Health facultative risks by applying sound medical, financial, occupational, avocational, and risk-selection judgment within established authority levels.
  • Deliver responsive, consultative support to clients by providing clear underwriting rationale, practical solutions and timely file management that strengthen long-term client relationships.
  • Contribute to underwriting modernization initiatives, including the effective use of data, automation, rules engines, digital evidence, and workflow tools to improve quality, consistency, and efficiency.
  • Mentor, coach and support underwriters through case consultation, co-signing, technical guidance, and knowledge sharing to build capability across the team.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams, including medical, claims, actuarial, pricing, reinsurance operation risk, compliance, and technology, as an underwriting subject matter expert in support of business priorities.
  • Monitor emerging risk trends, evolving sources of underwriting evidence, regulatory considerations, and market developments to support informed, consistent, and forward-looking risk selection.
  • Support continuous improvement by identifying opportunities to enhance underwriting guidelines, processes, client experience, controls, and training materials


Your Profile:
  • Bachelor's degree (or equivalent experience)
  • Industry designations preferred (FALU, FLMI), or a demonstrated commitment to ongoing technical and professional development
  • 5+ years of Life & Health underwriting experience, including complex and facultative cases; Critical Illness or Disability underwriting experience is an asset.
  • Bilingual French/English (oral and written) is required.
  • Advanced knowledge of medical, financial, occupational, and avocational risk assessment, as well as insurance principles, contract provisions, and regulatory considerations relevant to underwriting decision-making.
  • Strong digital fluency, including comfort using underwriting platforms, data, automation, rules engines, workflow tools, and evolving sources of evidence to support consistent and efficient risk selection.
  • Excellent critical thinking, analytical judgment, and critical thinking skills, with the ability to synthesize complex information and provide clear, well-reasoned recommendations.
  • Strong relationship-building and influencing skills, with the ability to partner effectively with clients, underwriters, and cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor, coach or provide technical guidance to others, with a commitment to knowledge sharing and team development.

Our base salary range for this role is between $122,000and $159,000 per year, plus an opportunity for an annual company bonus based upon a percentage of eligible pay. The posted salary range reflects the expected compensation for candidates based in Ontario and the salary estimate displayed represents the typical salary range for candidates hired in this position. Factors that may be used to determine your actual salary include your specific skills, how many years of experience you have and comparison to internal equity.
