In this role, you will work at the intersection of engineering, law, and client impact — partnering with lawyers, AI engineers, and solution architects to discover, design, and deploy bespoke legal AI solutions. This is a customer-facing role that is ideal for individuals who have experience practicing law as well as building AI software solutions. Your work will help translate complex legal workflows into trusted, production-ready AI systems that support law firms in high-stakes moments.


About the role

In this opportunity as a Senior Legal AIEngineer,  youwill:
 

  • Participate in high-value client engagements, guiding technical discovery, scoping legal use cases, and building credibility with legal and technical stakeholders.

  • Translate complex legal workflows, business pain points, and client goals into intelligent solution designs, technical specifications, and implementation plans.

  • Design and implement AI-powered solutions for legal workflows such as contract review, litigation support, discovery automation, and regulatory analysis.

  • Partner with our forward deployed engineers to build and test RAG pipelines, custom AI agents, and multi-step workflows thatleverageCoCounsel, Westlaw, Practical Law, and related enterprise systems.

  • Lead LLM evaluation efforts for legal use cases, including benchmarking output quality, assessing hallucination risk, testing citation quality, and validating fitness for high-stakes legal work.

  • Ensure deployed solutions meet ethical AI, data protection, and enterprise security standards whilemaintainingthe trust legal professionals expect.

  • Contribute reusable solution assets and evaluate emerging AI techniques to improve quality and delivery across the team.

About you

You'rea fit for the role ofSenior Legal AI Engineer if your background includes:

  • JD, formal legal training, or equivalent depth of experience working within a legal practice environment. 

  • Fluency in legal terminology and demonstrated experience working directly with lawyers, legal teams, or legal operations stakeholders. 

  • Software engineering experience, including experience focused on AI/ML or LLM-powered applications. 

  • Proficiencyin Python 

  • Strong understanding of machine learning concepts, LLM evaluation methodologies, prompt engineering, and AI system design for domain-specific workflows.

  • Excellent communication skills and comfort working independently in ambiguous, client-facing settings with both legal and technical stakeholders.

Thomson Reuters complies with local laws that require upfront disclosure of the expected pay range for a position. The base compensation range varies across locations. For any eligible US locations, unless otherwise noted, the base compensation range for this role is $100,100 USD - $185,900 USD. Base pay is positioned within the range based on several factors including an individual’s knowledge, skills and experience with consideration given to internal equity. Base pay is one part of a comprehensive Total Reward program which also includes flexible and supportive benefits and other wellbeing programs. This role may also be eligible for an Annual Bonus based on a combination of enterprise and individual performance.
