Position Summary

The Senior Lease & Fixed Asset Accountant is responsible for overseeing all aspects of lease accounting and fixed asset management in accordance with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), with primary responsibility for compliance with IFRS 16. This role ensures accurate financial reporting, effective internal controls, and efficient processes for the recognition, measurement, tracking, and reporting of the Company's leased and owned assets, including construction equipment, facilities, fleet, and rented assets deployed to project sites.

The position serves as the subject matter expert for lease accounting, fixed assets, capital expenditure reporting, and equipment financing activities. The Senior Lease & Fixed Asset Accountant partners closely with Regional Finance, General Accounting, Treasury, Equipment Operations, Financial Reporting, and other corporate and operational stakeholders to support strategic business decisions, maintain compliance with accounting standards, and strengthen financial governance across the organization.

Key Responsibilities

Lease Accounting & IFRS Compliance
  • Oversee all aspects of lease accounting in accordance with IFRS 16, including identification, classification, recognition, measurement, and disclosure requirements.
  • Maintain and administer the Company's lease accounting model, ensuring the completeness and accuracy of data related to right-of-use (ROU) assets, lease liabilities, discount rates, and related disclosures.
  • Research, analyze, and document lease modifications, renewals, reassessments, terminations, and variable lease arrangements to ensure appropriate accounting treatment.
  • Evaluate new contracts and agreements to determine whether they contain leases and assess accounting implications.
  • Ensure lease terms and contractual obligations are accurately captured and reflected in accounting records.
  • Prepare monthly lease accounting journal entries, reconciliations, depreciation schedules, interest calculations, and remeasurement adjustments.
  • Prepare quarterly and annual lease accounting disclosures and support statutory and management reporting requirements.
  • Monitor emerging IFRS guidance and corporate policies affecting lease accounting and recommend implementation strategies as appropriate.

Fixed Asset & Capital Asset Management
  • Oversee the fixed asset accounting process, including asset capitalization, depreciation, transfers, impairments, retirements, and disposals and ensure proper asset classification, useful lives, and depreciation methodologies.
  • Manage work-in-progress (WIP) accounting activities and ensure timely capitalization of completed projects.
  • Review supporting documentation for capital expenditures to ensure compliance with capitalization policies and accounting standards.
  • Coordinate periodic fixed asset inventories and asset verification procedures.
  • Ensure accurate tracking and reporting of company-owned equipment and assets utilized in operations and projects.

Equipment Financing & Lease Acquisition
  • Act as the accounting liaison for leased equipment acquisitions financed through the Company's equipment facility.
  • Collaborate with Equipment Operations, Treasury, and business leaders to evaluate proposed equipment acquisitions and financing structures.
  • Ensure lease inception data, financing terms, and supporting documentation are properly captured and incorporated into lease accounting records.
  • Support equipment strategy discussions, acquisition planning, and financing initiatives by providing accounting guidance and financial analysis.
  • Oversee administrative processes associated with regional equipment business units lease and asset management programs.

CAPEX Planning, Forecasting & Financial Analysis
  • Manage corporate capital expenditure (CAPEX) reporting, including consolidation and review of proposed capital budgets submitted by operating divisions.
  • Ensure compliance with Group reporting requirements and monitor capital spending against approved authorization limits.
  • Support the annual budget, forecast, and long-range planning processes related to leased and owned assets.
  • Own lease and fixed asset forecasting activities within PBCS, including depreciation, lease liability, interest expense, capital expenditures, and cash flow projections.
  • Maintain and administer the Company's SmartSheet tracker of all asset acquisitions and disposals.
  • Develop and maintain forecasting models and analytical tools to improve planning accuracy and support leadership decision-making.
  • Prepare variance analyses and management reporting related to asset utilization, lease obligations, and capital.

Financial Reporting, Controls & Compliance
  • Maintain strong internal controls over lease and fixed asset accounting processes, ensuring complete audit trails and supporting documentation.
  • Develop and enhance policies, procedures, and process documentation related to asset management and lease accounting.
  • Support internal and external audits by preparing schedules, documentation, reconciliations, and technical accounting analyses.
  • Ensure compliance with company accounting policies, IFRS requirements, and internal control standards.
  • Identify opportunities for process automation and continuous improvement to increase efficiency and reporting accuracy.


Business Partnership & Leadership
  • Serve as the primary accounting resource for lease accounting and fixed asset matters across the organization.
  • Partner with Treasury, Financial Reporting, Tax, Equipment Operations, Procurement, and Regional Finance teams to resolve complex accounting and reporting matters.
  • Participate in regional equipment management meetings, strategy discussions, and operational reviews.
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to accounting team members regarding lease accounting, fixed asset accounting, and related accounting standards.
  • Lead special projects, system implementations, and process improvement initiatives as assigned.
  • Build effective relationships with internal customers that reflect and support company core values.
  • Provide responsive and professional support to finance leadership, operational teams, and other stakeholders.

Process Improvement & Technology
  • Utilize financial systems and reporting tools to efficiently gather and analyze data for external auditors.
  • Identify opportunities to improve financial reporting processes, strengthen internal controls, and increase efficiency.
  • Continually seek opportunities to improve service, tools, reporting, and department deliverables.
  • Lead and assist in the implementation of finance transformation initiatives, reporting enhancements, and system improvements.

Qualifications

Education & Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance required.
  • 3-4 years of accounting experience, financial reporting, public accounting, or technical accounting experience preferred.
  • Experience with IFRS reporting requirements.
  • Experience in lease accounting and fixed asset accounting required.
  • Construction, engineering, infrastructure, or project-based industry experience preferred.
  • CPA certification required or actively pursuing CPA licensure.
