Senior Lead Designer

Position Summary:

Saber Power Services is seeking a highly experienced Senior Lead Designer to provide technical leadership for the design and development of electrical power system projects supporting utility, industrial, renewable energy, transmission, distribution, and substation clients. This position serves as the senior design authority within the department, responsible for leading complex projects, establishing design standards, mentoring design staff, and ensuring the delivery of high-quality engineering design packages.

The Senior Lead Designer works closely with Engineering Managers, Project Managers, and clients to develop innovative, cost-effective design solutions while maintaining compliance with applicable codes, client specifications, and industry standards. This individual also plays a key role in developing departmental best practices, improving design processes, and overseeing the technical quality of project deliverables.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design and development of complex electrical design packages for transmission, distribution, substation, industrial, renewable energy, and battery energy storage (BESS) projects.
  • Serve as the technical lead for multidisciplinary design teams throughout all phases of project execution.
  • Develop and review single-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, panel layouts, grounding plans, conduit layouts, cable schedules, lighting plans, equipment layouts, and construction drawing packages.
  • Perform advanced electrical equipment layouts and cable routing utilizing client standards and project specifications.
  • Provide technical direction and mentorship to designers, drafters, and junior design staff.
  • Establish and maintain drafting standards, design procedures, and quality control processes across the department.
  • Perform final quality assurance and technical reviews of design packages prior to client submission.
  • Coordinate with engineers, project managers, field personnel, and clients to resolve design challenges and ensure project success.
  • Review engineering calculations, vendor drawings, specifications, and client standards to ensure accurate implementation within design documents.
  • Lead design review meetings and participate in interdisciplinary project coordination.
  • Support proposal development by providing design input, labor estimates, and technical recommendations.
  • Assist Engineering and Operations leadership with departmental planning, staffing, workload forecasting, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Support field investigations, site visits, constructability reviews, and as-built documentation when required.
  • Identify opportunities to improve design efficiency through technology, automation, and standardized processes.
  • Maintain project documentation, revision history, and design records throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Stay current with changes to industry standards, client specifications, software platforms, and emerging technologies.
  • Perform other job-related duties as requested by management.


Qualifications:

  • Associate degree in Drafting, Engineering Technology, Electrical Technology, or a related field required. Bachelor's degree is preferred. Equivalent industry experience will be considered.
  • Minimum 10 years of electrical design experience supporting utility, transmission, distribution, substation, industrial, or renewable energy projects.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience leading design teams or serving as a technical lead.
  • Expert proficiency with AutoCAD, MicroStation, and/or AutoCAD Electrical.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret engineering calculations, technical specifications, one-line diagrams, protection schemes, and vendor drawings.
  • Extensive knowledge of electrical equipment including transformers, switchgear, circuit breakers, protective relays, batteries, chargers, motor control centers, and associated power system components.
  • Previous experience supporting EPC, utility, or consulting engineering projects is preferred.
  • Skills:
