Job Description

We are currently seeking a Senior LCE Underwriter to join our team.

Under general direction, underwrites and approves/declines mortgage broker and branch applications within assigned limits, communicates lending decisions to brokers and applicable branch staff, and provides solutions to challenging credit applications. Works closely with brokers and branch advisors on underwriting issues to strengthen relationships, ensuring growth targets of the LCE are met.

Here's what would be included as a part of your typical day
  1. Underwriting: Ensures the quality of applications received by reviewing and adjudicating (approving/declining) mortgage applications by adhering to Tru Cooperative Bank policies and procedures and Mortgage Brokers Guidelines within assigned limits. Reviews all deals outside of Underwriters lending limits or due to policy exceptions and make any recommendations to the Manager(s), Retail Credit for approvals. Underwrites more complex deals (construction, etc.). Works independently and uses sound judgment to make lending decisions.
  2. Broker/Branch Relations: Maintains and strengthens relationships with brokers and branches, communicates underwriting guidelines and policies, and seeks opportunities to develop new relationships. Works independently under the guidance of management in the LCE and acts as the main contact for branches in the absence of Assistant Manager, LCE. Oversees the LCE operations process by providing guidance to LCE underwriters and administrators.
  3. Process Excellence: Works independently under the guidance of the Manager & Assistant Manager, LCE and act as the main contact for brokers/branches in the absence of the Manager, LCE. Analyzes, recommends solutions and/or resolves complex problems referred by staff members relating to sales and service delivery; approves loans in excess of underwriter's lending limits. Fully accountable for meeting financial performance, quality and service delivery targets for the LCE. Responsible for the LCE Audit process.
  4. Stakeholder Management: Delivers exceptional service to internal and external stakeholders (central loans administration team, retail branches and brokerages) by determining their needs and responding to inquiries in a timely, efficient, and courteous manner.

Required Skills, Experience & Qualifications
  • College Trade or Tech School Diploma (2 years) in a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience required
  • Bachelor's Degree preferred
  • 3 years experience as a retail lender in a financial institution including 2 years in an underwriting role required
  • Credit Union experience preferred
  • Basic knowledge of project management preferred
  • Take responsibility for self-development and continuous learning to achieve required knowledge for the job.
  • Proven organizational, time management and communication skills
  • Ability to apply sound judgement and make decisions independently
  • Expert knowledge of Banking Systems, and Loans Origination System
  • Strong PC literacy with demonstrated MS office experience using a wide range of MS applications.
  • Strong knowledge of Internet & Web Based Applications, Banking Systems, and Loans Origination System
  • Displays an understanding of risk and risk ownership by being able to demonstrate adherence to policies and procedures.
