Full Job Description
We are seeking a Senior Lawyer to join our growing Tax Controversy & Dispute Resolution team in Montreal. This position offers an exciting opportunity to work on complex tax disputes, influence litigation and dispute resolution strategy, and contribute to the continued growth of one of Canada's leading tax practices. As a trusted advisor to clients and a key member of our team, you will own the following responsibilities: - Act as the primary point of contact between clients and tax authorities, providing strategic guidance throughout the dispute resolution process. - Develop and execute dispute resolution strategies, including preparing written representations and advocacy materials at all stages of tax audits, objections, appeals, and litigation. - Conduct sophisticated legal research and draft high-quality legal opinions, submissions, and correspondence relating to complex tax matters. - Assess engagements, prepare fee estimates, manage budgets, and oversee files through to successful completion. - Build and strengthen relationships across BDO Canada's service lines to identify opportunities for collaboration and client referrals. - Contribute to the growth and development of the practice through knowledge sharing, mentorship, and coaching of junior counsel and law clerks. Admission to multiple Canadian bars is considered a strong asset. - Minimum of 10 years of experience practicing tax law within a leading national, regional, or boutique law firm, accounting firm, or professional services environment. - An LL.M. in Taxation and/or completion of the CPA Canada's In-Depth Tax Course is considered a significant asset. - Bilingualism (English and French) is required due to the frequent and complex interactions with English-speaking partners and clients in Quebec and across Canada, as well as the need to prepare legal and client-facing documentation in English. - Exceptional interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, with the ability to influence and build credibility with clients and stakeholders. - Proven ability to collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary and cross-functional teams. - Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills, with a high degree of professional judgment and attention to detail. - Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and competing deadlines in a fast-paced professional services environment.
