Why does the job exist?The Senior IT Database Admin will:
- Serve as the technical authority for production and test database environments, ensuring high availability, performance, security, and compliance;
- Lead complex maintenance and operations (M&O) initiatives for databases and database servers;
- Establish, implement, and enforce database standards, best practices, and governance;
- Provide senior-level escalation support for critical incidents and resolve complex production issues.
- Mentor and guide other database administrators to strengthen team capability;
- Influence long-term database technology strategy while delivering hands-on execution;
- Protect data assets and support mission critical applications through reliable, scalable database infrastructure.
How does it get done?The Senior IT Database Admin is responsible for:
Technical Strategy & Leadership:
- Overseeing database design, tuning, backup/recovery, and DBMS installations;
- Evaluating technical approaches and recommending solutions to complex database challenges;
- Maintaining deep expertise in MS SQL Server and enterprise architecture;
- Collaborating with engineers on highly available and redundant storage designs;
- Developing and managing capacity planning for future demand.
Security & Risk Management:
- Maintaining database security, access controls, integrity, and audit trails;
- Developing and enforcing security policies, standards, and procedures;
- Ensuring proper data validation and secure implementation across systems;
- Participating in investigations and incident response.
Performance & Incident Resolution:
- Serving as the escalation point for critical and complex database issues;
- Designing and implementing performance and reliability improvements;
- Troubleshooting advanced database and application performance issues;
- Performing expert-level administration across enterprise environments.
Automation & Operations:
- Introducing automation, tools, and scripts to streamline database operations.
Project & Team Leadership:
- Leading high-impact database and infrastructure projects;
- Assigning work, advising DBAs, and supporting management and technical teams;
- Participating in refining SLAs to align technical delivery with business needs.
Who are the customers?
- Internal and external Health Care Authority (HCA) stakeholders, including staff, management, leadership teams, state agency partners, and outside organizations that interface with various projects across State Agencies.
Ideal Candidate
The Ideal candidate will:
- Demonstrate deep SQL Server expertise, including stored procedures, DTSX packages, Integration Services, server objects, and HA/DR;
- Show strong proficiency with SSMS, SSAS, and SSRS, with Oracle, PostgreSQL, or Snowflake as a plus;
- Combine hands-on administration with the ability to design and lead enterprise scale, highly available architectures.
- Excel at performance tuning, capacity planning, incident resolution, and security/compliance oversight;
- Make high-level architectural decisions, mentor DBAs, and collaborate with technical and business teams;
- Maintain a strong focus on automation and operational excellence;
- Remain steady under pressure, prioritizing uptime, data integrity, and performance;
- Manage cloud-based databases, preferably in AWS.
Minimum Qualification
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems (MIS), Information Technology, Engineering, or similar technical degree and three (3) years of experience in data analysis, design, storage, and security. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling seven (7) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License.
Must obtain a Defensive Driving Certificate.
Employment is subject to a pre-employment criminal background investigation and is conditional pending results.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required.
