Job Duties

The Firearms Accountability & Industry Responsibility (FAIR) Unit is a newly established Unit in the Office of the Attorney General. The Firearms Accountability & Industry Responsibility Unit exercises the investigative and civil enforcement authorities vested in the Attorney General by HB21/SB27, the Virginia Firearm Industry Standards of Responsible Conduct, passed by the 2026 Virginia General Assembly. This Unit shall investigate and bring civil enforcement actions against firearm industry members in violation of HB21/SB27 passed during the 2026 Virginia General Assembly Session.

Under the supervision of the Section Chief and in collaboration with assistant attorney generals, outside counsel, investigative partners, and regional program coordinators, the investigator in this position will conduct civil and regulatory investigations of firearm industry members and other entities whose business practices may violate Virginia law or contribute to the unlawful diversion, trafficking, or misuse of firearms. The investigator will develop evidence, analyze records and data, identify patterns of potential unlawful conduct, and help build impactful enforcement matters designed to protect communities and hold bad actors accountable.

The preference is for this position to be based in Richmond, Virginia, but open to position being based in a regional office, Virginia Beach, Fairfax, Abingdon, or Roanoke, Virginia.
The position will report directly to the FAIR Unit Chief and Deputy Attorney General for Criminal Justice and Public Safety.

Minimum Qualifications
• Ability to conduct thorough, objective, and timely civil, criminal, regulatory, or compliance investigations.
• Strong analytical skills and the ability to identify meaningful patterns, discrepancies, and investigative leads from records and data.
• Ability to review and understand complex business, financial, regulatory, and transactional records.
• Strong investigative research, interviewing, and fact-development skills.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to prepare clear and persuasive investigative reports.
• Ability to work effectively with attorneys, law enforcement agencies, regulatory partners, businesses, witnesses, and members of the public.
• Sound judgment, discretion, professionalism, and the ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters.
• Ability to independently manage priorities while contributing effectively to a collaborative, mission-driven team.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and the ability to use spreadsheets, databases, and other tools to analyze investigative information.
• Commitment to public service and to advancing the Office of the Attorney General's mission to protect Virginians and promote public safety.
