DescriptionThe first and primary assignment of this role is an exciting Renewable Energy Mega-Project in Pumped Storage Hydro Power Generation.
Reporting to Project Manager, the Senior I&C Engineer will be accountable for executing projects through sound engineering expertise and project management, engaging in relationship building activities with clients, and identifying opportunities for Magna IV Engineering.
Specifically focusing on solving problems involving power systems, the successful candidate will provide technical expertise, plan and execute projects, provide mentorship, coaching, and leadership to team members, and assist developing new business; ultimately providing exceptional client service through the completion of power systems projects.
Sectors served by Magna IV Engineering include power utilities, gas and oil industry, bulk material handling, pulp and paper, industrial substations, generation facilities, co-generation units, and others.
RESPONSIBILITIESResponsibilities of a Senior I&C Engineer include providing technical expertise in instrumentation, controls, automation, industrial networks, and vendor package integration for utility and heavy industrial projects, including hydro and balance-of-plant applications. This role includes engineering design, technical review, client support, leadership and mentoring of team members as required.
Engineering & Design (~80% time commitment)- Performance of some or all the following, at a level suitable for engineering authentication:
- Design and review of instrumentation and control systems for hydro, utility, and industrial balance-of-plant applications
- Development of control system architecture, including PLC, remote I/O, HMI, SCADA, network, and vendor interface systems
- Development and review of industrial network architecture, communication interfaces, and integration requirements
- Design and review of control panels, PLC panels, remote I/O panels, junction boxes, and related control system equipment
- Preparation and review of control schematics, wiring diagrams, loop diagrams, interconnection diagrams, panel layouts, cable schedules, and termination drawings
- Preparation and review of instrument indexes, I/O lists, instrument datasheets, installation details, and related design documentation
- Selection and specification of field instrumentation
- Development and review of control narratives, functional descriptions, sequences of operation, alarm requirements, permissives, interlocks, and shutdown logic
- Review of PLC, HMI, and SCADA design requirements, including operator interface layouts, alarms, trends, reports, and system functionality
- Integration of vendor-supplied equipment packages into the overall plant control system
- Review of vendor drawings and documentation for compliance with project requirements, client standards, control philosophy, and constructability
- Preparation and review of technical reports, design basis documents, specifications, calculations, construction packages, and engineering deliverables
- Application of applicable codes, standards, and industry best practices related to instrumentation, controls, industrial networks, control panels, electrical safety, and hydroelectric facilities
- Support for the development of proposals, estimates, schedules, technical clarifications, and project execution plans
- Writing, authenticating, and final-reviewing reports, drawings, specifications, calculations, and other engineering deliverables prepared by others
Project Management/Support (~20% time commitment)- Complete all project deliverables to the satisfaction of clients and in accordance with project requirements
- Assign staff responsibilities clearly, including engineering, design, drafting, quality assurance, testing, and commissioning support
- Maintain strong communication and rapport with the client, project team, vendors, and construction/commissioning personnel
- Ensure safe work processes are followed and that work is completed on time, within budget, and to the required level of quality
- Track scope, schedule, budget, risks, changes, and technical issues throughout the project
- Support procurement, construction, commissioning, RFIs, field changes, deficiency resolution, and project closeout
- Complete project invoicing with the support of accounting personnel and maintain acceptable profit margins on assigned projects
- Manage the performance of project-assigned personnel through coaching, recognition, feedback, and performance management
- Mentor engineers, designers, programmers, technologists, and drafting staff in instrumentation, controls, automation, and network design practices Support the development of standard designs, templates, tools, checklists, and lessons learned
- Act as a source of technical leadership, talent development, and growth for Magna and all staff
- Support employee engagement practices to help attract, develop, and retain strong technical talent
Requirements- Professional Electrical Engineering or Professional Technologist degree required, registered in (or able to register immediately in) Alberta (APEGA)
- A minimum 12 years experience in instrumentation, controls and automation design
- Ability to perform electrical engineering design and studies independently and competently
- Must have a valid drivers' license and be able to travel (within North America)
SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE SKILLS & ASSETS- PE (United States registered Professional Engineer) certification is an asset.
- Strong knowledge of instrumentation, controls, automation, and industrial network systems in utility, generation, and heavy industrial environments.
- Experience with hydroelectric, pumped-storage, balance-of-plant, power generation, or similar industrial facilities is an asset
- Ability to develop and review I&C design deliverables, including control system architecture, panel layouts, schematics, wiring diagrams, loop diagrams, interconnection drawings, cable schedules, termination drawings, instrument indexes, I/O lists, datasheets, and related documentation
- Ability to develop and review control narratives, functional descriptions, sequences of operation, alarms, permissives, interlocks, and shutdown logic
- Working knowledge of PLC, HMI, SCADA, remote I/O, historian, and industrial communication systems
- Experience with industrial networks, communication protocols, and vendor package integration
- Ability to review vendor drawings and documentation for compliance with project requirements, client standards, constructability, and system integration needs
- Working knowledge of applicable codes, standards, and industry best practices related to instrumentation, controls, industrial networks, control panels, electrical safety, and industrial automation

- Willingness to travel and work flexible shifts, including occasional weekends, evenings, and holidays
- Ability to work in an office environment, at industrial sites, and from a home office
