DUTIES
The Senior IT Analyst analyses, researches, designs, recommends and provides input into budgets, establishes, schedules, arranges, and coordinates the effective, secure, and efficient operation and maintenance of the University's server infrastructure and many of the applications that run on these servers.
MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Monitors, maintains, reviews, and verifies the server infrastructure to ensure that it is operating effectively, efficiently, reliably and securely. The University's server infrastructure including servers such as Domain Name Servers, DHCP Servers, FTP Servers, News Servers, E-Mail, Backup, etc.
- Maintains and supports various application system servers. Provides training and shares expertise on proper server setup and administration to other IT departments and to other IT staff.
- Analyses, researches, designs, recommends, provides input for budget development, establishes, schedules, and arranges for the installation of servers.
- Analyses, researches and provides solutions to technical problems by providing effective solutions and recommendations and providing corrective actions.
- Coordinates, arranges and provides response to emergency or on demand work requirements.
- Liaises with and coordinates peers, co-workers and contractors. Works closely with the Manager, Technical Services and other IT Services personnel, researchers, faculty and staff, consultants, equipment suppliers, and contractors. Liaises with research groups across campus in a technical capacity. Liaises with, and coordinates, projects with outside organizations such as other Universities and colleges, PLNet, and BCNet.
- Analyses, researches and implements new and innovative ways of providing a robust server infrastructure to improve performance and security of applications running on those servers.
- Arranges for the expansion and development of the University's server infrastructure by the incorporation of new technologies and the replacement of old and obsolete equipment through making recommendations during the budgeting processes.
- Reviews relevant literature in the field of server infrastructure and applications, engages in self-training and research on the Internet, attends conferences and takes advantage of professional development opportunities to maintain currency of technical skills and knowledge.
- Prepares various reports and technical documents.
- Manage and maintain Linux application WordPress core installations, configurations, migrations, backups, updates, plugins and integrations.
- Monitor application security, performance and reliability; identify and resolve bottlenecks.
- Debug and resolve issues related to databases, application logic, and network interactions
- Support front-end developers by maintaining a stable, well-documented backend environment
- Maintain documentation related to configurations, processes, and troubleshooting procedures, and incident logs.
- Troubleshoot production issues and respond to outages or degraded service conditions

QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION:
- Grade 12 plus a bachelor's degree involving Computer Science plus certification in a server operating system
EXPERIENCE:
- Seven years' experience in server administration and or software engineering, standard Internet protocols and network services, and in the administration, administrating and/or development of at least two of the operating systems used in our centralized computer systems environment, including experience in project management
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE OR ABILITIES RELATED TO THE JOB
- Ability to deal with computer users, coworkers and external vendors with courtesy and tact
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
- Ability to plan and organize work
- Ability to exercise considerable independent action
- Ability to operate related equipment
- Ability to learn new technology quickly and relay it to others
- Ability to work with various operations systems (e.g. Unix, Microsoft Server, etc.) and write computer programs in various languages (e.g. Java, C++, Perl, C-Shell, etc.)
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Sitting at desk and computer for long periods of time
- Visiting client locations several times a week
- General office conditions; on a daily basis working for under an hour in a cool, loud environment (i.e. Data Centre) with some lifting involved (20-30 lbs) (e.g. helping mount servers in racks)
- Travel required
The salary for the above position is determined by the Collective Agreement with the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 4879, as it presently exists.

$43.52 - $48.36 ( CUPE Grade 13 (90% - 100%) )
