Work Arrangement:

Hybrid: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to the office in Milford or Warren, MI, or Sunnyvale, CA. A minimum of three times per week or at another frequency as dictated by the business.

General Motors is at the forefront of the transformation of automotive with the electrification of our portfolio and the development of leading-edge central compute and autonomous capabilities. Our Semiconductor / Semiconductor Technology Engineering team is a dynamic, high-energy, and innovative group focused on design and commercialization of leading-edge hardware enabling the future of GM’s vehicle architecture.

We are seeking a Senior Hardware Engineer to lead the hardware development of wired connectivity technology, including Serializers/Deserializers and Ethernet-based network solutions. This hardware engineer position is highly collaborative and depends on building strong partnerships with internal teams responsible for electronic control unit (ECU) design, as well as semiconductor partners. The role sits within the Network Technology and Design team in the compute and connectivity organization, reflecting GM’s growing need for hardware design ownership in this domain.

What You’ll Do (Responsibilities):

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams within software, mechanical, and manufacturing to ensure successful integration of network technologies into ECU electrical designs.

  • Perform detailed hardware analysis, including worst-case analysis, signal integrity, and power integrity, for SerDes and Ethernet interfaces and related circuitry.

  • Troubleshoot hardware issues, perform root cause analysis, and implement robust, long-term solutions across ECUs and associated connectivity hardware.

  • Conduct design reviews and provide constructive feedback to ensure high-quality, manufacturable designs that meet performance, safety, and reliability targets.

  • Develop hardware requirements and test specifications for SerDes/Ethernet connectivity and supporting circuitry.

  • Develop a clear test strategy covering all aspects of development, from component and board-level validation through system integration and production readiness.

  • Lead bench test execution throughout the development lifecycle, including bring-up, characterization, and debug of prototype and production-intent hardware.

  • Establish domain expertise for semiconductors and ECU product lines within your scope of responsibility, with focus on wired connectivity technology (SerDes and Ethernet PHYs, switches, and related components).

  • Manage technology roadmaps in close collaboration with industry leaders and semiconductor partners to ensure GM’s network hardware solutions remain on the forefront of performance, cost, and scalability.

Required Qualification

  • BS in Electrical Engineering / Electronics / Computer Science

  • 5+ total years of engineering experience at an OEM, OR at a semiconductor supplier, OR at a Tier 1 ECU supplier

  • 3+ years of engineering experience in electronic hardware design and development

  • Working knowledge of automotive electronic hardware and automotive software architecture

  • Strong proficiency in circuit design, schematic creation, and PCB layout

  • Experience in hardware design tools such as Mentor Graphics Xpedition and ORCAD

  • Experience with lab equipment such as power supplies, oscilloscopes, signal generators, and multimeters

  • Exceptional demonstrated experience leading projects to completion

Compensation:
The compensation information is a good faith estimate only. It is based on what a successful applicant might be paid in accordance with applicable state laws. The compensation may not be representative for positions located outside of New York, Colorado, California, or Washington. The expected base compensation for this role is: $106,600 - $192,700. Actual base compensation within the identified range will vary based on factors relevant to the position.

Bonus Potential: An incentive pay program offers payouts based on company performance, job level, and individual performance.
