Your Opportunity

Stantec is seeking a Senior Geophysicist to join our team in our Calgary, Alberta office. This individual will help lead and grow Stantec's Geophysics - West practice and collaborate with our geophysics team in eastern Canada to build and deliver integrated geophysical services nationally. The successful candidate will provide senior technical leadership for near-surface geophysics projects across multiple sectors.

The role will involve close collaboration with geotechnical, geohazards, environmental, geological, civil, and other technical teams across Stantec.

Your Key Responsibilities
  • Provide senior technical leadership in the planning, execution, interpretation, and reporting of near-surface geophysical investigations across Western Canada and in support of national projects.
  • Lead and support geophysical programs using methods such as seismic refraction, MASW, downhole VSP, resistivity, GPR, electromagnetic methods, TEM, magnetics, and vibration monitoring, with familiarity in related acquisition and interpretation workflows.
  • Support geophysical applications for infrastructure, environmental, geohazard, resource, and risk-mitigation projects, including characterization of soil stratigraphy, buried infrastructure, bedrock, shear wave velocity, and other subsurface features relevant to design and assessment.
  • Collaborate with geotechnical, geohazards, environmental, hydrogeology, and engineering teams to develop integrated site characterization programs and practical client-focused solutions.
  • Help establish and grow Stantec's geophysics service offering in Western Canada in collaboration with the broader Canadian geophysics team.
  • Mentor junior and intermediate staff, including geoscientists and staff with field-based geophysics experience, and help build technical and practical capability within the team.
  • Support business development activities, including proposal preparation, scope development, client discussions, and identifying opportunities to expand geophysical services within Stantec's existing client base and project portfolio.
  • Plan and lead field crews to safely acquire the data necessary to solve client challenges, including work in remote and logistically complex environments.
  • Oversee project delivery including budgeting, scheduling, invoicing, coordination, technical quality, and timely execution of deliverables.
  • Support the development and maintenance of safety documentation, procedures, and field practices required to build and sustain geophysical operations within Stantec.
  • Contribute to equipment and software planning, acquisition strategy, and implementation as the geophysics practice grows.
  • Build collaborative, respectful, and effective relationships within Stantec's business lines, technical delivery groups, and key practitioners across Canada.
  • Travel within Western Canada and elsewhere in Canada, as required for field programs, project delivery, team collaboration, and growth initiatives.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

The successful candidate should possess the following qualifications:
  • Strong technical knowledge of near-surface geophysics and demonstrated experience applying geophysical methods to consulting projects.
  • Demonstrated experience with geophysical methods including seismic refraction, MASW, downhole VSP, resistivity, GPR, EM, TEM, magnetics, and vibration monitoring; experience with seismic reflection and borehole geophysics is considered an asset.
  • Strong project management and coordination skills, including experience with budgets, schedules, invoicing, field planning, data acquisition, interpretation, and reporting.
  • Strong people skills with an ability to mentor, coach, and support the development of junior and transitioning staff in a collaborative team environment.
  • Effective communication, technical writing, and client engagement skills, with the ability to explain methods, findings, assumptions, and limitations clearly.
  • Practical understanding of health, safety, and quality systems related to field-based consulting services; experience developing or maintaining safety procedures and compliance systems is an asset.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams across multiple offices and regions.
  • Experience with software used in geophysical processing, interpretation, and visualization.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects concurrently and adapt to changing priorities and field conditions.
  • Participation in technical conferences, industry events, and professional practice activities is considered an asset.
  • Willingness to travel and participate in remote field work, with the ability to adapt to rugged terrain and variable weather conditions.
  • A valid driver's license is required.

Education and Experience
  • Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Geophysics, Geology, Earth Science, or a related discipline from a recognized university.
  • Minimum of 12 to 15 years of relevant professional experience in near-surface geophysics, geoscience consulting, or related project delivery.
  • Registered as a Professional Geoscientist (P.Geo.) in good standing in Alberta; registration in additional Canadian jurisdictions would be considered an asset.

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
