Full Job Description

At The Washington Post, reader revenue powers independent journalism. Digital Subscriptions — and the paid media that fuels subscriber acquisition — represent one of the company’s most important and dynamic growth engines.

As subscription markets mature and acquisition channels evolve, disciplined financial insight is critical. This role helps ensure that growth is not only strong, but economically sound. By connecting funnel performance, pricing strategy, retention dynamics, and marketing investment to financial outcomes, you will help leadership make informed, durable decisions.

Reporting to the Director of Finance, Strategy & Growth, this position offers direct exposure to senior Finance and Growth leaders and supports one of the Post’s most strategically significant P&L areas.

This role is based in Washington, DC and works on-site five days per week to support close collaboration with Growth and Finance partners. We value analytical rigor, curiosity, and steady execution.

What Motivates You

  • You are intellectually curious about how subscription businesses scale — and what makes them profitable.

  • You enjoy working at the intersection of data, experimentation, and financial strategy.

  • You are motivated by turning ambiguity into structure and clarity.

  • You value rigorous analysis that informs real decisions, not just reporting.

  • You take ownership of your work and follow through on details.

  • You are comfortable engaging with business partners and contributing perspective.

How You'll Support the Mission

The Skills and Experience You Bring

  • Support forecasting and long-range planning to improve the predictability and transparency of Digital Subscription revenue and contribution margin.

  • Enhance driver-based models that link acquisition, conversion, retention, and ARPU trends to financial performance.

  • Analyze LTV/CAC by channel and cohort to inform marketing investment efficiency and capital allocation.

  • Evaluate pricing tests, promotional strategies, and bundling initiatives to clarify downstream margin implications.

  • Develop structured variance bridges and KPI reporting to help leadership quickly understand performance drivers.

  • Contribute financial insight to QBRs and strategic investment discussions to elevate decision quality.

  • Improve planning and reporting workflows to increase analytical depth while reducing manual effort.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of FP&A, strategic finance, or growth-focused analytical experience, ideally in a subscription, consumer tech, or performance marketing environment.

  • Experience contributing to forecasting, budgeting, or scenario modeling in a dynamic operating context.

  • Strong foundation in driver-based modeling, cohort analysis, and sensitivity testing.

  • Advanced Excel proficiency and disciplined model design.

  • Experience with Hyperion/Smart View and Tableau preferred.

  • Comfort working with large datasets and synthesizing insights for senior stakeholders.

  • Clear written and verbal communication skills.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business, Economics, or related field.

  • Nice to have: familiarity with SQL or Python for exploratory analysis.

Collaboration makes us stronger. That’s why our offices are designed with open layouts, modern technology, and easy access to transportation. With certain exceptions for newsgathering and business travel, we work on-site five days a week.

About Washington Post

The Washington Post is an American daily newspaper published in Washington, D.C. It is the most-widely circulated newspaper within the Washington metropolitan area and has a large international audience. Daily broadsheet editions are printed for D.C., Maryland, and Virginia. The newspaper has won the Pulitzer Prize 65 times for its work, the second-most of any publication. It is considered a newspaper of record in the U.S. Post journalists have also received 18 Nieman Fellowships and 368 White House News Photographers Association awards. The paper is well known for its political reporting and is one of the few remaining American newspapers to operate foreign bureaus. The Post was founded in 1877. In its early years, it went through several owners and struggled both financially and editorially. Financier Eugene Meyer purchased it out of bankruptcy in 1933 and revived its health and reputation, work continued by his successors Katharine and Phil Graham, who bought out several rival publications. The Post's 1971 printing of the Pentagon Papers helped spur opposition to the Vietnam War. Subsequently, in the best-known episode in the newspaper's history, reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein led the American press's investigation into what became known as the Watergate scandal, which resulted in the 1974 resignation of President Richard Nixon. The advent of the internet expanded the Post's national and international reach. In October 2013, the Graham family sold the newspaper to Nash Holdings, a holding company owned by Jeff Bezos, for $250 million.
