The School of Medicine (SOM), one of three professional schools in Health sciences, includes approximately 20 departments, 1,700+ faculty, 600 students, and 1,000 residents and fellows. The SOM manages roughly $1 billion in annual expenditures, including $400 million dedicated to research.

The SOM Dean's Office embraces a progressive approach to employee development and seeks individuals who demonstrate integrity, strategic thinking, intellectual curiosity, collaboration, and teamwork. The Business Affairs unit within the SOM Dean's Office oversees financial and business operations for both the School of Medicine and the Dean's Office, including mission-based planning, funds-flow strategy, financial operations, standards development, and partnership with SOM departments.

Under the general direction of the Director for Strategic Operations, the incumbent serves as a member of the SOM Dean's Office - Business Affairs finance team, working closely with the financial planning leads.

This position applies the skills of a seasoned financial professional to support the management of the SOM Dean's Office resources (over $120M annually) and contribute to the annual SOM financial planning process (over $1.2B).

SOM Dean's Office Resource Management Responsibilities:

This role supports the planning and management of SOM Dean's Office resource allocations and commitments. Working closely with senior managers and institutional partners, you will help coordinate resource allocation activities, maintain financial reporting and forecasting tools, and support fiscal planning processes that affect departments across the organization. This role offers significant exposure to financial systems, gift and endowment management, and operational improvement initiatives, making it an excellent opportunity for professionals seeking to broaden their experience in resource management and higher education finance.
  • Support the administration and tracking of SOM Dean's Office allocations, commitments, fund transfers, and fiscal reconciliations, including data entry, routine in-system commitment updates.
  • Prepare financial analyses, projections, and reports that inform resource allocation decisions and long-term planning efforts.
  • Assist with the management and monitoring of gift, endowment, and other funding portfolios to ensure accurate reporting and stewardship of funds.
  • Collaborate with campus and Health Sciences partners to support resource-based processes, related financial systems, and data integrity.
School Financial Planning Responsibilities:

This role works alongside senior financial leaders and experienced budget professionals to support the development, analysis, and management of SOM financials that directly contribute to the organization's missions and priorities. The position combines hands-on financial analysis with opportunities to contribute to process improvements, resource planning, and financial decision support, providing valuable exposure to executive-level operations and institutional strategy.
  • Support budget development, forecasting, variance analysis, and financial reporting activities for SOM departments and leadership.
  • Analyze financial and resource data to identify trends, assess performance, identify risks, and provide recommendations that support informed decision-making.
  • Partner with team leads to develop financial projections and support operational planning initiatives.
  • Contribute to financial process improvement efforts, documentation, training, and the development of standard operating procedures that promote consistency and efficiency.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Seven years of relevant experience or a Bachelor's degree in related area plus three (3) years of relevant experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of finance policies, practices, and systems. Advanced knowledge of finance and budget policies, practices and systems; budgeting and reporting techniques; fund accounting; accounting and bookkeeping.
  • Ability to independently gather required information to organize, and perform financial analysis assignments. Experience in analyzing complex issues or problems, formulating and implementing creative and appropriate solutions having evaluated all risks and consequences.
  • Proven ability to effectively present information verbally and in writing in a clear and concise manner. Ability to speak in group settings and provide training to large groups. Possess skills of tact, poise, diplomacy, and confidentiality with a diverse population of staff and faculty in a high pressure and demanding environment.
