Senior Facilities Mechanical Engineer

This position is responsible for providing a full range of advanced physical plant Mechanical Engineering planning, design/engineering, project management, and operational support responsibilities implementing The Jackson Laboratory's capital projects portfolio. The successful candidate will provide technical design and support for sophisticated HVAC, steam, and chilled water plant operations as well as leading energy efficiency projects supporting nearly 2M ft2 of complex biomedical research laboratory and vivaria space across five domestic US sites.

Key Responsibilities & Essential Functions

Mechanical Engineering Expertise:
  • Designs HVAC, hydronics, steam, chilled water, process gases, and lab/vivaria ventilation and control systems.
  • Develops feasibility studies and implements projects for energy efficiency and greenhouse gas reduction
  • Performs system modeling and commissioning oversight
  • Supports vivarium and BSL1 & 2 rated laboratory environments with specialized mechanical systems.
  • Develops and maintains construction design standards within mechanical engineering discipline for all Jackson Laboratory locations, ensuring adherence to industry best practices and standards.


Project Management Leadership:
  • o Leads major tenant improvements, relocations, infrastructure upgrades, and new construction driving scope, schedule, and execution from initiation through closeout.
  • o Develops and manages project budgets leading bidding, vendor selection, and contract negotiations. Tracks costs, manages forecasts, and identifies cost saving opportunities. Procures, directs, oversees, reviews, and approves the work of external engineering design and planning consultants, providing expert insights and mentorship to the team.
  • o Acts as primary contact for internal stakeholders and external partners. Provides clear and regular communication on project status, risks, and required decisions holding vendors accountable for delivery and performance.


Regulatory Compliance and Standards Adherence:
  • o Ensure strict adherence to all relevant federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and standards, including IBC, NFPA, and OSHA, while overseeing the planning and execution of projects.


Facilities Management Support:
  • o Trains and mentors lower-level mechanical engineering staff, ensuring the effective growth and development of project teams.
  • o Provides specialized support in Facilities Management, offering guidance on effective maintenance strategies and equipment lifecycle management.
  • o Collaborate with Facilities Operations and Maintenance teams to optimize facility performance.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a related field.
  • More than 10 years of experience in mechanical engineering and project management, with a solid understanding of the specific requirements for critical infrastructure environments
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, enabling effective collaboration with diverse stakeholders both orally and in writing.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and/or Revit, MS Office Suite, MS Project, Trimble Construct (formerly e-Builder), or similar software applications.
  • Demonstrated organizational, analytical, project management, and time management skills, with the ability to adapt to changing priorities effectively.


Demonstrate expertise in a wide range of facility equipment and systems, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, central utility plant, building automation & controls, and other critical infrastructure components.

Pay Range: $106,020 - $153,729
