Senior Environmental Scientist

The Opportunity

Hudbay Minerals Inc. is seeking a Senior Environmental Scientist at our Copper Mountain Mine in Princeton, BC. This position is a 5x2 (or compressed 4x3), Monday to Friday, day shift schedule.

Location

Copper Mountain Mine, is located near the town of Princeton, British Columbia at the center of the scenic Similkameen Valley. Princeton is a community-oriented town with a diverse offering of activities, especially for those who love the outdoors. Princeton is also in close proximity to both the city of Vancouver and the Okanagan.

Summary

Reporting to the Regulatory Compliance Superintendent, the Senior Environmental Scientist is responsible for environmental project management and supporting environmental awareness across the site.

Key Responsibilities
  • Participate in all Company Environment and Health & Safety programs,
  • Provide oversite and coordination of Environmental management projects and baseline assessments to support operations and permitting
  • Contribute to and support preparation of environmental reports for regulatory reporting
  • Support TSM, NPRI and GHG Reporting and verifications,
  • Liaise with Communities of Interest as a technical expert where applicable,
  • Work to advance the use of technology in supporting compliance and monitoring,
  • Environmental lead for ISO 14001 compliance,
  • Develop and update environmental management plans and support implementation and compliance with the plans
  • Perform any other responsibilities related to the Senior Environmental Scientist role as required or as assigned by the department head.


Education & Experience
  • B.Sc., B.A.Sc., or B.Eng. in Environmental, Biological or Earth Sciences or other relevant science or engineering degree,
  • Registered professional or eligible for registration
  • Minimum 5 years of related work experience in the mining industry,
  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office suite and Google Platform,
  • Experience with engagement tracking software, environmental databases, and LMS programs
  • Project Management experience,
  • Mines Supervisor Certification (and experience) is an asset,
  • Possess a valid driver's license and have access to personal transportation.


Required Skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills,
  • High regard for personal safety and the safety of company property and other employees,
  • Regulatory Frameworks: understanding of the BC Mines Act, the BC Health, Safety and Reclamation Code, and the BC Environmental Management Act (EMA),
  • Understanding of the Permitting and licensing processes for mines in BC and Canada
  • Competent in effectively managing competing priorities, interdepartmental working relationships, and project timelines,
  • Ability to prepare documentation as well as regulatory and internal reports,
  • Good understanding of the Environmental Assessment process in BC and experience in preparing regulatory submissions and presenting stakeholder information,
  • Skill in working in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment, and able to adapt to shifting priorities,
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously under tight deadlines.

Working Conditions
  • Work consists of a team environment with regularly scheduled and ad-hoc meetings,
  • Frequent exposure to sitting at a computer doing work online,
  • Role may operate in a potentially stressful environment caused by constant requests from several people causing uncertainty and ambiguity,
  • Work may require the employee to be physically capable of working outside on difficult terrain and in all weather conditions.


Salary Range

$106,470.00 - $118,300.00 / annum.
