Senior Engineer - Tailings Planning & Projects

Location: Logan Lake, BC, Canada

Role Overview

Reporting to the Superintendent Geotechnical, the Senior Engineer, Tailings Planning & Projects, is responsible for life of asset and mid-range tailings construction planning and projects for the Highland tailings storage facility at Highland Valley Copper, the largest Canadian open pit copper mine. This key role will liaise closely with the Engineer of Record team and other key internal and external stakeholders and consultants to drive successful construction of one of North America's largest cyclone sand dams.

To be successful, we are looking for a motivated self-started with excellent interpersonal skills and proven experience in overseeing and coordinating multiple internal resources and external contractors in high functioning, collaborative project teams. The candidate must have strong analytical and problem-solving skills and be able to develop and communicate practical recommendations to mine management, engineers and operations or construction personnel. Demonstrated experience with project management and training in mine planning or construction planning is required; exposure to specific tailings planning experience or operations will be considered an asset. The ability to work well in a team environment, manage consultants, and oversee project schedules and budgets is integral to the role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures, perform regular Visible Felt Leadership (VFL) field visits.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with management, technical and operational staff
  • Supervise and provide guidance to intermediate or junior engineers as required
  • Develop, implement and maintain medium and long-range dam construction plans aligned with life of asset tailings storage requirements.
  • Lead and oversee the Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) program for all dam construction activities to ensure compliance with design specifications and regulatory requirements.
  • Manage, review and provide constructability oversight of work completed by external engineering consultants related to dam design and construction.
  • Develop and prepare annual and multi-year plans, budgets and forecasts aligned with mid and long-term dam construction objectives, ensuring accurate cost projections and alignment with operational and strategic initiatives.
  • Provide geotechnical support and guidance to construction execution, and troubleshooting as required.
  • Coordinate dam construction activities across multiple departments, ensuring alignment with operational needs.
  • Coordinate and secure all required permits for dam construction activities by collaborating with multiple departments across the site, ensuring compliance with internal processes and regulatory requirements.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil, Geological/Geotechnical, Mining Engineering or similar
  • Registered, or eligible to register, with Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia (EGBC) as a P. Eng.
  • Previous mine planning or construction planning experience, minimum 5 years
  • Experience reading and understanding technical drawings
  • Understanding of planning and scheduling principles and procedures
  • Computer skills including Microsoft Office, Maximo, AutoCAD or CAD related programs
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Valid driver's license


Pay Range: CAD $122,000 - $150,000 per year

The actual amount offered is determined based on the successful candidate's relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.

Working Conditions:
  • Location: Highland Valley Copper is a 50-minute drive from Kamloops, which has all of the comforts of city living and is also close to Merritt, Ashcroft, and Logan Lake, which all exude a small town community atmosphere.
  • Access: This is a drive-in/drive-out role. Most employees commute to site by car, and carpooling is common among team members.
