The Senior Electrical Engineer will lead the design, development, integration, and verification of embedded electronic systems for Koya Medical products and related manufacturing and test platforms. This role serves as a technical owner for analog, digital, mixed-signal, power-management, and microcontroller-based designs, with responsibility for system architecture, circuit design, PCB development, hardware bring-up, design verification, troubleshooting, and design transfer support. The position requires a hands-on engineer who can solve complex technical challenges and guide cross-functional decisions while supporting medical device quality, reliability, manufacturability, and regulatory expectations.
This position will report to the Director, Computer and Electrical Engineering. The role is full time, exempt and located at our Oakland, CA Facility.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:
• Lead architecture, design, analysis, and verification of analog, digital, mixed-signal, RF/wireless, and power-management circuits for medical device and manufacturing applications.
• Own schematic capture, PCB layout, BOM development, component selection, design documentation, and release activities using Altium Designer and related engineering tools.
• Apply design-for-manufacturability, design-for-test, signal integrity, power integrity, EMI/EMC, reliability, and safety best practices throughout the product development lifecycle.
• Lead hardware bring-up, troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, characterization, validation, and design verification testing of prototype and production electronics.
• Integrate and test communication interfaces including I²C, UART, SPI, USB, BLE, and other wired or wireless protocols as required by product architecture.
• Specify, integrate, and troubleshoot common transducers and electromechanical components, including audio components, visual displays, motors and motor drivers, sensors, batteries, chargers, and other peripherals.
• Collaborate with systems, software, mechanical, quality, regulatory, manufacturing, and supply-chain partners to translate requirements into robust, manufacturable electronic designs.
• Lead or contribute to design reviews, risk analysis, FMEA activities, design verification planning, technical documentation, and subsystem architecture decisions.
• Support development of test fixtures, manufacturing equipment, inspection methods, and production test strategies for components, assemblies, and finished devices.
• Investigate field, manufacturing, supplier, and reliability issues; implement corrective actions and design improvements.
• Provide technical leadership, design guidance, and review support to cross-functional technical contributors.
Minimum Qualifications
Education, Experience and Training
• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field; advanced degree preferred.
• 7+ years of experience in electronic hardware design and development, preferably in medical device, wearable, consumer electronics, robotics, or other regulated product environments.
• Expertise in analog, digital, mixed-signal, low-power, and power-management circuit design.
• Advanced proficiency with Altium Designer, schematic capture, PCB layout, BOM management, and design release processes.
• Strong experience with microcontrollers, embedded systems architecture, board-level interfaces, and peripheral integration.
• Strong knowledge of communication protocols including I²C, UART, SPI, USB, BLE, and other common embedded interfaces.
• Hands-on experience using oscilloscopes, multimeters, logic analyzers, spectrum analyzers, power analyzers, and other lab equipment for debugging and characterization.
• Demonstrated ability to lead complex technical investigations, perform root-cause analysis, and drive issues to closure.
• Experience contributing to design controls, risk management, verification testing, and documentation in a regulated product development environment preferred.
• Ability to communicate technical tradeoffs clearly and collaborate effectively across engineering, quality, regulatory, manufacturing, and supplier teams.
