Senior Electrical Engineer (Asset Integrity)

  • Based in Salt Lake City, Utah, supporting Rio Tinto Kennecott


About the role

We are looking for a Senior Electrical Engineer (Asset Integrity) to provide strategic oversight and technical expertise for the safety, reliability, integrity, and lifecycle management of Kennecott's electrical, power, control, and instrumentation assets. In this role, you'll collaborate across Operations, Maintenance, Projects, and Procurement to manage asset risk, strengthen compliance with Rio Tinto and industry standards, support long-term capital planning, and improve electrical system performance and safety.

What you'll be doing

Reporting to the relevant Engineering or Projects leadership team and working in a collaborative, safety-focused industrial environment, you will be:

  • Assessing electrical, power, control, and instrumentation asset condition, performance, integrity, and business risk across Kennecott operations, then developing lifecycle strategies that address safety, reliability, and obsolescence
  • Establishing compliance and assurance programs aligned with Rio Tinto Asset Management requirements, discipline and engineering standards, and applicable national and industry regulations
  • Leading arc flash studies, electrical protection reviews, and related assurance activities that strengthen electrical safety and risk controls
  • Developing and prioritizing a 10-year capital plan for electrical infrastructure, balancing safety, integrity, reliability, obsolescence, regulatory requirements, and financial constraints
  • Owning Kennecott electrical, power, control, and instrumentation standards and playing a key role in implementing the Rio Tinto electrical safety standard
  • Providing specialized electrical engineering guidance to Maintenance, Operations, Projects, Procurement, and Commercial teams while clearly communicating risks, recommendations, and priorities
  • Managing support service contracts and working with Procurement, Projects, and Maintenance to maintain effective supply and service arrangements for key electrical asset classes
  • Leading continuous improvement in electrical asset reliability, systems, and processes while serving as a central technical contact for key electrical systems across Kennecott

Required for Success

  • A degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field, or equivalent practical experience supporting complex electrical, power, control, or instrumentation systems
  • At least 3 years of experience in industrial electrical engineering, project engineering, maintenance, operations, or a related technical environment
  • Demonstrated success developing asset management plans and business cases that balance safety, operational reliability, regulatory requirements, asset risk, and financial constraints
  • Experience leading or supporting electrical, instrumentation, control system, protection, or assurance activities in an industrial environment
  • Ability to influence cross-functional stakeholders and communicate complex electrical risks, priorities, and recommendations clearly to technical and non-technical audiences


Helpful for Success

  • Experience leading arc flash studies, electrical protection reviews, compliance programs, or engineering assurance activities in a heavy industrial or mining environment
  • Experience managing specialized service providers, supply or service contracts, and external technical partners
  • Experience with long-term capital planning, electrical infrastructure lifecycle strategy, or electrical safety standard implementation across a complex operation
