Your Opportunity

Stantec is seeking a Senior Electrical Designer an experienced commercial construction electrical professional who wants to support a growing San Diego Buildings practice building, trusted client relationships, mentoring teams, and delivering technically excellent projects that improve experiences of building occupants.

As an experienced electrical design professional, you will be a trusted technical resource within Stantec's Buildings Engineers practice. You will organize electrical project work, coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, support clients through regulatory requirements, and contribute to Stantec's Buildings Engineering presence in Southern California.

You will balance hands-on project delivery with client support, mentorship, and technical stewardship, helping teams execute consistently and apply established practice standards and delivery methods.

Your Key Responsibilities

Business Development/Marketing - Build Trusted Client Relationships & Grow the Practice
  • Support business development efforts by contributing technical input to pursuits aligned with the studio, sector, and firm strategy.
  • Serve as a support to client-facing team members, helping clients navigate technical, regulatory, and operational challenges.
  • Partner with Principals and marketing teams on proposals, interviews, and client pursuits, contributing technical insight and market knowledge.
  • Participate in industry events, conferences, presentations, and professional organizations as appropriate.
  • Support client development and project opportunities in collaboration with Regional and Business Center leadership.
  • Assist in nurturing existing client relationships and identify opportunities for future work through strong communication and market awareness.

Commercial Buildings Project Delivery
  • Organize and deliver electrical engineering work for assigned projects-from planning through construction-with accountability for task quality, schedule, budget awareness, and client satisfaction.
  • Lead electrical design for commercial building facilities, including power, lighting, and fire alarm systems, ensuring compliance with California Electrical/Energy/Green codes, and other California building codes.
  • Assist in defining project scope, goals, and deliverables in collaboration with stakeholders, including contractors, developers, owners, regulatory bodies, and internal teams
  • Develop task-level work plans, resource needs, and budgets; track performance and provide project managers with scope, schedule, change, and financial input.
  • Work collaboratively with project leaders, architects, design partners, peers, contractors, and other stakeholders to define objectives, deliverables, and practical technical solutions.
  • Ensure compliance with education, utility, and/or industrial regulations, quality standards, and best practices
  • Engage with external partners, including vendors and regulatory agencies, to ensure compliance and integration of project design.
  • Establish strong relationships with contractors, vendors, and internal stakeholders to ensure design alignment with project objectives.
  • Conduct site visits and inspections to ensure project requirements are met.
  • Prepare detailed design documents, specifications, and reports.
  • Apply strong electrical engineering skills, experience, and knowledge to the design and oversight of the design for building projects.
  • Plan the production resources and workflow to produce the design documentation, drawings, and calculations required for electrical engineering projects.
  • Effectively delegate work to production support staff.

Mentor, Lead, and Inspire Teams
  • Mentor and support engineers and designers through task guidance, work review, informal feedback, and a culture of technical excellence and accountability.
  • Support workload planning, resource coordination, staffing discussions, retention efforts, and recruiting or interviewing activities as requested.
  • Contribute to improvements in practice standards, delivery methods, workflows, and technical processes to improve consistency, quality, and project outcomes.

Advance Technical Excellence
  • Stay current with evolving electrical engineering regulations, technologies, and best practices-and help integrate them into Stantec's standards and processes.
  • Proactively pursues additional knowledge in related disciplines through continuous technical leadership learning.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of Electrical Engineering specifications, technical documentation, and standards in collaboration with other technical resources within Stantec.
  • Promote innovative, sustainable, and resilient design solutions that enhance occupant, staff, and facility outcomes.

Your Capabilities and Credentials
  • 8+ years of experience in delivering electrical engineering designs within the civic, electrical transportation, higher education, commercial, and/or industrial sectors with a proven track record of successful project delivery.
  • Experience organizing electrical design work for straightforward to moderately complex building projects and coordinating with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Experience mentoring junior staff, supporting workload planning, and providing input on performance, goals, and technical development.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Working knowledge of project delivery fundamentals, including task-level scope, schedule, budget tracking, change awareness, and timely input to project managers.
  • Strong knowledge of applicable codes and standards, including California building codes, Green/Energy Code regulations, UL, NFPA, IEEE requirements as they specifically apply to buildings design in Southern California.
  • Exceptional technical understanding and working knowledge of electrical building systems & site infrastructure.
  • Ability to develop concepts and ideas before evolving them into coordinated project deliverables.
  • Functional knowledge of Revit and BIM workflows.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Bluebeam.
  • Possess a valid driver's license with a good driving record.

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in a related field
  • Minimum 8+ years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and demonstrated skills.
  • Professional Engineering (PE) - Electrical Engineering - is preferred.
  • Engineer-In-Training (EIT) certification or additional 7+ years' equivalent experience is required.
  • Experience with Lean/IPD, Design-Build, or Design-Assist delivery methods is a plus.
  • Familiarity with Healthcare, Higher Education, DSA, commercial building electrification, industrial, and/or similar sector clients are highly valued.

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.

Pay Range:
• Locations in CO, HI, IL, MD & Various CA, NJ, VA Areas-$100,000.00 - $145,000.00 Annually

Pay Transparency: In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible. Actual compensation for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.
