Position Overview:The Senior Director, Risk Identification & Insights, is responsible for the enterprise risk identification and assessment. The position also performs cross-domain risk synthesis, and independent surveillance of financial and nonfinancial risk. The Senior Director leads this team and is accountable for connecting risk identification, risk surveillance, risk appetite, risk assessment, change management to inform risk escalation and reporting. This role requires fluency across both financial risk (market, credit, portfolio) and non-financial risk (operational, model and compliance risks) - the team's core value is connecting signal across both domains, and the leader must be able to evaluate, challenge, and integrate work from specialists in each.
Our Impact:Freddie Mac's Risk Appetite & Insights team is part of Enterprise Risk Management second-line function. It is responsible for enterprise risk identification, assessment, aggregation, appetite, reporting, cross-domain risk synthesis, and surveillance of emerging risk.
Your Impact:- Own the enterprise risk identification and assessment program; facilitate the activity to ensure consistency across financial and nonfinancial risk domains.
- Lead the annual enterprise risk aggregation, consolidating top and emerging risks submitted across 1LOD divisions into a single enterprise-level view and recommend the enterprise's material risks to the CRO.
- Direct the synthesis of risk identification, assessment, and independent surveillance work - financial and nonfinancial - into a connected enterprise risk insight view feeding both the annual aggregation and ongoing senior leadership reporting.
- Evaluate internal and external data driven insight before escalation: does the connected view hold up, is it distinguishable from noise, does it represent genuine risk convergence across domains rather than coincidence.
- Build and lead a team spanning methodology, financial risk insight, and nonfinancial risk insight.
- Represent the function to senior risk leadership, including in settings where the team's findings conflict with the prevailing view held by business or other risk functions.
Qualifications:- 12+ years in enterprise risk management, with direct experience in both financial risk (credit, market, or portfolio risk) and nonfinancial risk (operational, cyber, or compliance).
- Demonstrated experience leading or contributing to an enterprise-level risk identification, aggregation and assessment process and communicating to senior executives, board or regulators.
- Strong track record of translating complex, cross-domain risk analysis into a clear, defensible narrative for board-level and senior executive audiences.
- Demonstrated ability to lead technical specialists in disciplines the leader does not personally execute - evaluating and challenging their work rather than deferring or micromanaging.
- Experience operating within a second-line/three-lines-of-defense governance model, including working alongside an independent challenge function.
- Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree and/or relevant certification (CFA, FRM, CRM) strongly preferred. GSE, mortgage finance, or large-bank enterprise risk experience strongly preferred.
Keys to Success in this Role:- Demonstrated ability to synthesize disparate, ambiguous data into a clear point of view - not just report what happened, but why it matters and what connects to what.
- Comfortable operating with incomplete information and revising a position when better evidence appears; equally comfortable holding a position when it doesn't.
- Track record of working effectively with large stakeholder base, especially navigating situations to reconcile differences in perspectives.
