Full Job Description
Senior Director, Card Risk Controls

Senior Director, Card Risk Controls is responsible for driving Card Risk Controls Strategy and transformation as part of our Card Risk Enhancement Program. As a leader, you will be responsible for partnering across functional groups in shaping strategic plans, designing and implementing improvements, and developing world - class risk management practices that create a competitive advantage for Card.

As a Senior Director leading the Card Risk Controls team, you will apply your strategic and leadership skills to major company challenges. You will lead and team with world-class professionals to transform how we design and test controls.  And you'll do it all in a collaborative environment that values your insight, encourages you to take on new responsibility, promotes continuous learning, and rewards innovation.

In a nutshell, we are looking for a business-focused problem solver who is a strong collaborator with a tech/data-forward lean willing to help us rethink how we design and manage controls.

Specifically, this leader will focus on a few key areas:

  • Drive Disruptive Vision & Transformation: Act as a bold "dot-connector," naturally challenging the status quo to rethink "always-on monitoring" across 150M+ Card accounts; shift the organization from a "check-the-box" compliance mindset to a high-value business risk model.

  • Execute AI & Data Innovation: Serve as an "execution machine" with a proven track record of delivering measurable results; leverage data, AI, and advanced analytics to build a proactive, future-state control environment.

  • Optimize Global Talent & Capabilities: Harness an insatiable curiosity to quickly master evolving technologies, shifting our global talent model from traditional "testers" to tech-forward "analysts" across the US, India, and the Philippines.

  • Lead & Scale High-Impact Teams: Lead a team of Directors and their multi-regional teams with the strategic mandate to restructure the organization, set a transformative vision, and upskill the talent pipeline.

  • Foster Collaborative Partnerships: Cultivate deep, cross-functional trust to break down organizational silos, collaborating seamlessly with diverse stakeholders to solve complex risk problems collectively.

The ideal candidate for this role will have strong experience in Risk Management or Consulting within the financial services industry, ideally with experience across the lines of defense.  Top notch problem solving, communication and analytical skills as well as the ability to drive decision-making with senior executives across the business and lines of defense will be critical to success. Additionally, this candidate will possess significant leadership experience, including leadership of direct teams, program delivery, change management, and influence/collaboration with multiple stakeholders across the organization.

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Strategic leadership: Develop and drive transformative initiatives that enable efficiency and value to our businesses, helping drive controls automation with a focus on business value.

  • Leadership:  Manage and develop a team of control design experts, control testers, analysts, and project managers.  Able to lead a team through change to drive a culture of strong risk management. Coach and mentor associates throughout the organization with a goal of developing and retaining talent.

  • Risk Management:  Drive transformation of how we manage our Controls program, shifting left to prevention and ‘always on monitoring’.

  • Teamwork:  Work closely with colleagues across Capital One including: Technology,  Operations, Risk Management, Product and others to drive improvement in quality, customer service, and profitability

  • Strategic & analytic orientation: A proven track record of decision making and problem solving based on analytics. Conceptual thinking skills must be complemented by a strong quantitative orientation

  • Strong business judgment, leadership and integrity:You are a tenacious decision maker, able to bring a healthy, aggressive, yet responsible approach to business

  • People leadership experience: Ability to build and leverage the capabilities of a high-performing team, as well as business partners across the enterprise. You  foster innovation, drive critical decisions, hold business partners accountable, and are able to consistently deliver results

  • Executive communication skills: Impeccable written and oral communication credentials, coupled with strategic influencing skills and the ability to drive agreement through intellect, interpersonal and negotiation skills

  • Clear results orientation: display an intense focus on achieving both short and long term goals. You are able to drive and execute an agenda in an uncertain and fluid environment

  • Successful track record of thriving in a fast paced, entrepreneurial and dynamic environment. Previous consulting experience is a plus
