Job DescriptionThe Senior Credit Underwriter is a key member of the Metals & Chemicals team. They partner with Relationship Managers on Middle Market and Corporate Banking credit relationships to evaluate, structure, approve, and close new relationships and retain/expand relationships with existing customers while maintaining disciplined adherence to the Bank’s credit policies and risk appetite. They support the entire team by providing senior-level underwriting expertise transaction leadership, and coaching.
The Metals & Chemicals underwriting team covers a nationwide portfolio of C&I loans and associated exposures within the Metals & Chemicals sectors. This includes mining, metal processing/distributing, and metal manufacturing as well as a diverse set of chemical manufacturers and distributors throughout the Middle Market and Corporate Banking space.
Position Description
U.S. Bank is seeking a motivated individual as a Senior Credit Underwriter for the team. This individual contributor will be a vital member of the team, serving as a leader on underwriting new transactions by managing execution from initial assessment, underwriting, credit approval, and through closing. The Senior Credit Underwriter will also directly manage select complex credit relationships, serve as a lead underwriter on material credit actions, and provide guidance and coaching to other team members.
Key responsibilities include
- Perform and review complex underwriting analysis and transaction structuring to facilitate newopportunities and ongoing portfolio review/monitoring.
- Prepare and present new opportunity screening memos and new borrower credit approval memos/write-ups, as well as preparing and presenting amendment/incremental financing recommendations.
- Recommend extensions of credit based on deep knowledge of C&I lending standards along with Bank’s credit policies and risk appetite.
- Serve as a senior liaison to Relationship Management, Credit Risk Management, and business line leadership on negotiation of transactions.
- Present to business line leadership and Credit Risk Management as it relates to credit recommendations and portfolio management.
- Coach team members to increase effectiveness of credit presentations, structural recommendations, and overall underwriting quality.
- Lead legal documentation review and negotiation process in concert with internal and external counsel.
- Lead and identify emerging deteriorating of credit relationships and provide key recommendations regarding credit/asset management.
- Complete quarterly monitoring and internal risk rating recommendations based on borrower performance.
- Review credit memos and approve within assigned authority or recommend for further approval by Credit Risk Management.
- Participate in both virtual and in-person prospect/client calling activities.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in finance, accounting or other related field
- 10 or more years of banking experience
- Three or more years of leadership experience
Preferred Skills/Experience
- Strong command of general accounting principles, understanding of financial statements, financial analysis, and corporate finance.
- Strong leadership abilities and strategic management skills
- Self-starter with willingness to work under pressure to meet deadlines, while also developing ways to work smarter (assist in the improvement of tools, models, processes, etc.)
- Innate curiosity in different industries/companies, credit structures, and banking/capital markets transactions.
- Demonstrated experience structuring and underwriting complex C&I transactions.
- Team-focused attitude to work with partners toward a common goal 6 to see a transaction through to close.
- Strong leadership abilities with deal teams and on transaction/situations requiring presentation skills and dialogue with senior leaders.
- Highly proficient in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

The salary range reflects figures based on the primary location, which is listed first. The actual range for the role may differ based on the location of the role. In addition to salary, U.S. Bank offers a comprehensive benefits package, including incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase 401(k) contribution and pension (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). Pay Range: $159,970.00 - $188,200.00
