What is the opportunity?

As a Senior Counsel, US Employment Law, you will be part of the Global and US Employment Law Teams and provide employment law support in the United States on contentious and non-contentious matters to functional and business partners across the enterprise, including City National Bank for the United States. Employment law issues include common law and statutory employment laws, hiring, immigration, compensation, benefits, advice about single and group reductions in workforce, as well as privacy, disability (insurance) and human rights.

What will you do?
  • Provides advice and counsel to functional and business partners to assist in the management of legal and reputational risk involving employment-related issues at the enterprise level for the United States
  • Provides efficient and effective delivery of legal services to all platforms, which align with Law Group's goals and objectives related to Designated Counsel
  • Manages litigation for employment law disputes by identifying and assessing risk (legal, regulatory and/or media) and co-ordinating a strategy for the defense of same
  • Manages the cost and performance of external counsel and assures cost effective and efficient delivery of legal services
  • Ensures timely updating of all matters in accordance with RBC Law Group procedures, reporting out internally on all matters as required and appropriate provisioning on all matters where the Senior Counsel is identified the professional responsible for the litigation and as required by Finance
  • Provides legal support and advice to functional and business partners with respect to legislative developments of employment standards and other related federal, state and local laws
  • Manages investigations involving allegations of employee misconduct
  • Assists or leads ad hoc projects as directed
  • Works collaboratively with other members of RBC Law Group, including the Global and US Employment Law Teams and the CNB Legal Team


What do you need to succeed?

Must-have
  • 8+ years of experience with an in-house legal department and/or law firm
  • Law degree from accredited law school and actively licensed with the California State Bar
  • Demonstrated knowledge in employment law, strong legal skills and sound legal judgment
  • Enterprise mindset to understand global issues and operate in a global business
  • Ability to build effective relationships with internal partners, regulators, and external counsel, working constructively to provide strategic legal advice
  • Strong problem-solving, communication and decision-making skills.
  • Strong ability to balance competing work demands and manage multiple priorities.
  • Understanding of a highly regulated industry and the complexity of decision making in a highly regulated environment operating across legal regimes and geographies
  • Ability to work from an RBC office location in Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Jersey City or New York at least 4 days per week (up to 1 day of remote work per week is presently permitted)


Nice to have
  • Good understanding of the relevant RBC businesses and their operations, including the market environment affecting the relevant RBC businesses
  • In-house legal experience an asset

The good-faith expected salary range for the above position is $200,000 - $230,000 depending on factors including but not limited to the candidate's experience, skills, registration status; market conditions; and business needs. This salary range does not include other elements of total compensation, including a discretionary bonus and benefits such as a 401(k) program with company-matching contributions; health, dental, vision, life and disability insurance; and paid time-off plan.
