Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and adaptable Controls & Automation Engineer to join the engineering team at our Kansas City Plant.

In this role, you will design, develop, and implement control systems and automation solutions that support the startup and qualification of a new manufacturing platform. You will play a key role in improving line performance, product quality, and safety through robust and scalable control system design.

This position requires strong technical expertise in industrial automation, along with the ability to integrate systems, troubleshoot performance issues, and collaborate across functions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Control System Design: Develop and implement control strategies that ensure safe, reliable, and efficient manufacturing operations.
  • Automation Development: Design and program automation systems using PLCs, SCADA, and associated technologies to improve productivity and system performance.
  • System Integration: Integrate equipment and control systems across the line, including machine-to-machine communication and higher-level data systems.
  • Advanced Technologies: Apply data analytics, digital tools, or advanced control methods (e.g., AI/ML where applicable) to improve process capability and decision-making.
  • Performance Optimization & Troubleshooting: Analyze system performance, identify root causes of issues, and implement sustainable improvements.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with manufacturing, quality, maintenance, and project teams to identify automation opportunities and deliver improvements.
  • Documentation & Training: Develop and maintain technical documentation (system specifications, standards, and user guides). Train plant personnel on system operation and support.
  • Safety & Compliance: Ensure all systems meet applicable electrical, machine safety, and corporate standards, and actively promote safe work practices.


Job Qualifications

Education & Experience:
  • Bachelor's/Master's degree in Engineering or related technical field. Electrical or Automation Engineering preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience in industrial controls and automation


Technical Skills: Experience with -
  • PLCs (ControlLogix preferred) and HMI/SCADA systems
  • Process control (continuous and/or batch)
  • Instrumentation, drives, motion control, and vision systems
  • Industrial networks and system architecture
  • Computing environments, including server infrastructure and virtualization
  • Electrical design standards and applicable codes
  • Machine safety and electrical safety practices


Manufacturing Environment: Experience working in a production environment, including:
  • Change management and version control
  • System validation and startup support
  • Managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced setting


Work Discipline & Safety Mindset: Demonstrates strong ownership, attention to detail, and adherence to standards. Consistently applies electrical and machine safety practices.

Leadership & Collaboration: 5+ years of professional experience with collaborating across teams/organizations. Able to prioritize work, develop execution plans, and support others. Strong communication skills with the ability to work both independently and across teams.

Ability to work in office 5 days a week in person at our Kansas City Plant in KC, Kansas.

10% travel required (internal and domestic).
