Job Description:Orbital Engineering is seeking a talented
Senior Civil Site Grading Engineer to provide technical support and direction for our Substation Design Team. This
REMOTE WORK position requires demonstrated leadership, engineering/design competency, a strong desire to learn, and a strong aptitude for design automation. Additionally, the position requires excellent communication, leadership and client relation skills.
Candidates with a PE license are strongly preferred. While experience in the electric utility industry is not required, it is preferred.
The ideal candidate will provide leadership and oversight of substation civil site grading engineering and consulting services for clients across the US. Primary responsibilities focus on creating site grading design deliverables, reviewing drawing packages, establishing site grading department engineering standards, accelerating engineering delivery through automation, and supporting project bidding estimates. Projects range in size, complexity, and voltage class from small equipment upgrades to large projects in transmission and distribution substations. The candidate may prepare, provide guidance, or assist in preparing and developing the engineering deliverables for electric substation projects. This position provides leadership and mentorship to other team members and contributes to the technical development of the group as well as the quality of our deliverables.
Essential Functions- Proficiency in Autodesk Civil 3D for surface modeling, grading design, corridor and road modeling, pipe networks, earthwork volume calculation, and production of civil design deliverables.
- Substation civil/site design including site grading and earthwork, cut/fill optimization, storm water management and drainage design, erosion and sediment control, access roads and driveways, retaining walls, surfacing sections, oil containment, site layout, plans, sections, profiles, details, and quantity takeoffs.
- Prepare and review civil design deliverables including grading plans, drainage plans, erosion control plans, site plans, road and yard sections, general construction notes, and earthwork quantity summaries.
- Perform hydrologic and hydraulic analyses for site drainage, detention/retention sizing, culvert and ditch design, and floodplain evaluation.
- Prepare and support permitting deliverables including NPDES/SWPPP, local grading and stormwater permits, floodplain and wetland coordination, and responses to jurisdictional review comments.
- Coordinate with geotechnical engineers on subgrade preparation, soil suitability, compaction and fill requirements, groundwater, and site-specific recommendations.
- Coordinate survey and topographic data collection, review existing conditions, and establish site datum, benchmarks, and control.
- Act as project lead or independent reviewer for projects assigned.
- Provide technical support for clients and support regional business development initiatives as a technical resource under the direction of the Department Manager.
- Lead and mentor teams of engineers and designers and assume responsibility for their success on projects.
- Support creation of proposals and scope development.
- Work in a project team environment with other engineers and designers involved in detailed electrical, structural, and physical design and project management of utility substation projects.
- Participate in project conceptualization, work planning, and project execution.
- Establish, maintain, and improve civil engineering standards, calculation templates, design criteria, drawing and note templates, review procedures, and quality expectations for the department.
- Calculations for studies and reports and preparation of earthwork, surfacing, drainage, and site work specifications.
- Coordination of design activities with other disciplines and groups, including grading interfaces with foundations, grounding grid, conduit and duct bank routing, fencing, and equipment layouts.
- Develop, improve, and champion engineering processes, tools, and technology that increase quality, consistency, efficiency, and scalability across the department.
- Introduce design automation workflows to integrate engineering calculations, surface modeling, design deliverables, quality checks, and production tools into repeatable, scalable processes.
- Provide leadership, training and mentoring to other engineers and team members.
- Regularly meet and correspond with clients, jurisdictional agencies, or external partners.
- Perform quality reviews for other engineers and designers.
- Conduct field visits for site walkdowns, constructability reviews, construction support, earthwork and erosion control observation, and other site meetings as needed.
- Provide construction phase support including RFI responses, submittal review, field change coordination, and record drawing preparation.
- Support business development and marketing initiatives.
- Other duties may include 3D surface and corridor modeling, engineering automation initiatives, development of reusable tools or templates, or involvement in industry and professional technical committees.
- Work with Project Management team to develop project plans and provide project updates.

Qualifications:- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited college or university, or a related field with equivalent experience.
- Position to be filled at an appropriate level according to candidate experience (Master's degree may be considered as portion of total experience).
- Engineer IV - 5+ years related experience
- Senior Engineer I 7+ years related experience & PE Required
- Senior Engineer II 10+ years related experience & PE Required
- Senior Engineer III 15+ years related experience & PE Required
- Professional Engineer licensure strongly preferred
- Proficiency with relevant codes and standards.
- Demonstrated interest in applying technology to engineering delivery, including design automation, parametric modeling, scripting, data-driven quality checks, or workflow optimization.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively organize multiple complex assignments and competing priorities to produce accurate products on time.
- Ability to collaborate in cross-functional work teams.
- The successful candidate must have exceptional analytical and decision-making skills, and a successful record of positive interactions with clients.
- Ability to lead staff, delegate assignments and drive positive results.
- Experience in creating and reviewing site grading design drawings.
- Ability to successfully work with remotely located team members.
- This position requires the ability to pass a post-offer drug (including marijuana) and alcohol test in compliance with Federal regulations and is also subject to random testing as a condition of continued employment.
Location Note:This is a remote position. Compensation is based on market data and internal equity and may vary depending on the candidate's location.
Salary Range:$120,000-200,000 annually (based on experience, qualifications, and location)
