Senior Chemical Process Design Engineer - (POG) Process Optimization and Growth

Job Summary

The Marathon Carson Refinery located in Carson, California is seeking an experienced Senior Chemical Process Design Engineer (POG) Process Optimization and Growth to contribute to refinery/ organizational long-term strategy development and identifies opportunities to increase throughput, improve yields, increase reliability and optimize energy use in process units. This position will develop process designs for new projects and unit modifications, including PFDs, P&IDs, and heat/material balances.

The available onsite schedules for the position are 9/80, 5/40 or 4/1, after hours calls maybe requires infrequently and support of TAR project related implementation every few years. Core hours: 8 AM - 3 PM.

Key Responsibilities

  • Contributes to refinery/organizational long-term strategy development and identifies opportunities to increase throughput, improve yields, increase reliability and optimize energy use in process units. Develops process designs for new projects and unit modifications, including PFDs, P&IDs, and heat/material balances.
  • Performs process simulations and calculations to support equipment sizing, hydraulic analysis, and energy optimization as well as lead economic analysis and establish project rate of return.
  • Collaborates with project engineers, operations, and external vendors to ensure alignment of design with operational needs.
  • Prepares process design packages and support HAZOPs, LOPA studies, and other safety reviews.
  • Provides technical leadership during project execution, including design reviews, construction support, and commissioning.
  • Stays current with industry standards and best practices to ensure high-quality, cost-effective designs.
  • Serves as mentor for less experienced engineers.


Education, Experience and Skills

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must have a Bachelors Degree in Chemical Engineering. (Education must be obtained/completed prior to start date.)
  • Must have at least 3 years of chemical process design engineering AND 4 years of operations support experiencein a refinery and petro-chemical industry. Candidate must have a total of 7 years of experience.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft 365: Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Must be able to wear appropriate PPE in the refinery (respirator), be able to physically perform all tasks in the field and take hair drug test and physical.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the US without the need for future VISA sponsorship.
  • Travel Requirement is 5-10%.
  • Must be able to work onsite schedules for the position are 9/80, 5/40 or 4/1, after hours calls maybe requires infrequently and support of TAR project related implementation every few years. Core hours: 8 AM - 3 PM.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledgeable in FCC, Hydrotreating and Hydrocracking, Reforming unit technologies is preferred.
  • Previous refinery operations support engineering and process designed experience is preferred.
