DescriptionThe Senior Capital Project Engineer (SCPE) will be part of a team that develops the engineering plan, engineering design, and construction for up to a dozen pilot facilities to support the scale up of product and processes in bio-industrial manufacturing. Based on biochemical engineering principles, the SCPE will collaborate to identify needs and convert them into robust unit operations and facilities' designs supporting domestic scale up and innovation. This position may be involved in development of the long-term capital investment strategies for the pilot plant network, or on projects seeking operational efficiencies, capacity expansion, and continuous improvement. The SCPE will contribute by bringing real world experience to the design, construction, commissioning, and start-up of these piloting facilities. They will work in conjunction with BioMADE's extensive set of member organizations, world-class engineering and design consultants, and pilot facility technical team to improving these assets and enable domestic companies to successfully scale and begin production of their innovative products.
Key ResponsibilitiesTechnical Leadership & Facility Design
- Define, design, and deliver pilot scale and intermediate scale facilities as part of a national network of 12-15 sites.
- Partner with members and external consultants to translate needs into robust unit operations and facility designs that support domestic scaleup to production level capabilities.
- Contribute to equipment specification and selection, bid package development, procurement activities, installation oversight, and startup support.
- Ensure effective knowledge transfer across teams, partners, and stakeholders.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Engineering Documentation & Technical Review
- Author or review frontend loading (FEL) documents, engineering drawings, equipment datasheets, and technical documentation.
- Review and develop piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs) for utility systems and process equipment.
- Support development and review of automation and control system documentation.
- Author or review Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Process Safety Reviews.
Vendor & Stakeholder Coordination
- Work closely with vendors to ensure alignment on technical requirements, equipment performance, and delivery expectations.
- Manage engineering deliverables, project schedules, and budgets in collaboration with internal teams and external partners.
- Coordinate with cross functional stakeholders to ensure facility and process designs meet operational, safety, and regulatory requirements.
Project Management
- Lead planning, execution, and delivery of engineering and facility related projects from concept through commissioning.
- Develop and maintain project timelines, resource plans, and risk mitigation strategies.
- Facilitate communication across internal teams, external partners, and contractors to ensure project alignment and timely decision making.
- Track project progress, identify deviations, and implement corrective actions to maintain scope, schedule, and budget.
- Support project reporting, documentation, and governance activities to ensure transparency and accountability.
Additional Project Management Responsibilities
- EPC coordination and accountability.
- Cost, schedule, and change order management.
- Maintain and update the project risk register; escalate issues as needed.
- Procurement tracking and coordination with supply chain partners.
- Maintain an owner decision log to support timely project governance.
- Establish and manage meeting cadence; ensure action item closure.
- Oversee construction coordination and field execution alignment.
- Lead stakeholder communication across internal and external groups.
- Ensure contract and administrative follow through across all project phases.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise- BS, MS or Ph.D. in Engineering or related discipline (chemical engineering, bioengineering, biotechnology, biochemical engineering, mechanical engineering, or other relevant engineering discipline) with substantial industrial experience.
- 8+ years of experience in capital project management, production management, or reliability management with significant portion of that in industrial settings.
- 4+ years of experience in executing capital projects from initial design to start up
- Excellent understanding of industrial equipment and facilities, including electrical, mechanical, piping, safety, and control systems.
- Prior experience in capital projects for fermentation and downstream processing required. Experience designing equipment, processes, or facilities at pilot or higher scales preferred.
- Experience with diverse bioreactor types and a wide variety of downstream processing unit operations is desired.
- Experience with bioprocessing equipment such as sterilizers/sanitizers, CIP/SIP systems, bioreactors, centrifuges, homogenizers/disruptors, various filtration systems, membrane separations, drying, distillation, crystallization, or chemical transformations.
- Prior experience in working with vendors, managing project schedules and budgets, and creating Standard Operating Procedures will be crucial to ensure these facilities are operated safely.
- Experience working with a diverse group of contractors and vendors on facility design and ongoing operations required.
- The ability to be self-directed and work independently under tight deadlines is required. Must be motivated and able to work hands-on in a fast paced, deadline-driven environment.
- Excellent organizational and detailed planning skills required.
- Must possess and cultivate the highest levels of safety awareness.
- Strong change management skills, and an ability to manage projects through influence as well as through contractual arrangements required.
- Working knowledge of process control and automation is desired.
- Must possess excellent computer skills.
- Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills and have experience with record keeping, writing reports, and SOPs.
