Overview

The Senior Building Controls Design Engineer position is an exciting opportunity to join PM Group's quickly growing Philadelphia area team out of Conshohocken, PA. Together are sharing knowledge, learning, growing, and continuing to be an integral part of supporting PM Group's ongoing expansion in the US. Our office is executing cutting-edge projects for Pharmaceutical, Biologics and Cell & Gene Therapy, manufacturing facilities - from feasibility through to qualification - for both local and international clients. We are looking for a Senior Building Controls Design Engineer who enjoys client interaction as well as the technical aspects of the position. This individual understands the technical aspects of life science BMS/BAS design engineering including but not limited to designing, implementation, and leading of complex Building Automation & Management Systems, focusing on HVAC, lighting, and energy integration, involving technical leadership and advanced programming (BACnet, Modbus, etc.). The ability to successfully handle multiple real-time complex project and operational tasks as well as maintain a strong work ethic and drive to deliver for clients as a collaborative colleague are a must for this role. The Senior Building Controls Design Engineer will be mentored by department leadership and will assist with the development of design by defining system architecture, creating sequences of operation, managing project deliverables, and operating as a technical expert for Building Automation Systems. The Senior Building Controls Design Engineer will also be involved with the mentoring and development of less experienced engineering team members. Expect project work to include all levels of design: feasibility studies, conceptual & schematic design, construction documentation, and construction administration. Project sizes will vary and will consist primarily of life science industry projects doing both existing building improvements and new construction.

Responsibilities

  • Lead client interface to gather project requirements and present designs at key stage gates (BOD, IFT, IFC)
  • Develop control systems across various BMS platforms, including documentation such as BMS I/O lists, HVAC and Utility Sequences of Operation, Scope of Works, Functional and Hardware Specifications
  • Design BMS system architecture and topography
  • Select and approve instrumentation in line with project specifications
  • Analyze complex engineering challenges and deliver effective, innovative solutions
  • Coordinate with internal and external project teams to ensure alignment and integration across disciplines
  • Prepare BOD-level BMS cost estimates
  • Manage BMS contractors, including review and commentary on site queries, technical submittals, and panel shop drawings/wiring diagrams to ensure compliance with design intent
  • Review and approve Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) and Site Acceptance Test (SAT) documentation.
  • Witness FAT and SAT procedures when required
  • Attend project, staff, company, design review, ISO, and group meetings and actively participate in discussions
  • Able to effectively deal with issues arising throughout the daily cycle and develop solutions to ensure successful resolution
  • Mentor and support the development of junior BMS engineers
  • Manage multiple projects and deliverables concurrently with a focus on quality and timeliness
  • Drive continuous improvement in engineering practices and internal processes
  • Maintain high standards of accuracy, attention to detail, and adherence to quality protocols
  • Demonstrate a professional demeanor and uphold strong ethical standards in safety, quality, environmental protection, and business conduct
  • Special projects as needed

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering (Mechanical, Building Services, or Automation Engineering)
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant Life Sciences industry (Pharmaceutical, Biopharmaceutical, Cell & Gene Therapy) experience; candidates with 8+ years will also be considered
  • Strong knowledge and hands-on experience with Building Management Systems (BMS) and Qualified BMS (QBMS) platforms
  • Proven experience in BMS redundancy design and implementation
  • Familiarity with instrumentation design and approval processes
  • General understanding of network configuration, computer hardware/software, and automation applications
  • Solid understanding of current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP), including 21 CFR Parts 11, 210, 211, and EU Annex 11
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Visio, PowerPoint)
  • Working knowledge of Bluebeam, AutoCAD, BIM, and Revit Systems
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively with stakeholders across all levels of the organization
