Your Opportunity

This role is ideal for a Healthcare Mechanical Engineer leader who wants to move beyond project execution and actively shape a growing healthcare practice-building trusted client relationships, influencing strategy, mentoring teams, and delivering technically excellent projects that improve patient outcomes.

As a Senior Associate, you will be a visible leader and trusted advisor within Stantec's Healthcare practice. You will lead multidisciplinary project teams, guide clients through complex regulatory environments, and help grow Stantec's healthcare presence in Northern California and the US West.

You will balance hands-on project leadership with business development, mentorship, and technical stewardship-playing a key role in differentiating Stantec as an innovative and reliable healthcare design partner.

Your Key Responsibilities
  • Business Development/Marketing - Build Trusted Client Relationships & Grow the Practice
  • Lead and support business development efforts to win new work aligned with the studio, sector, and firm strategy.
  • Serve as a key client contact and trusted advisor, helping healthcare clients navigate technical, regulatory, and operational challenges.
  • Partner with Principals and marketing teams on proposals, interviews, and client pursuits, contributing technical insight and market knowledge.
  • Represent Stantec through industry events, conferences, presentations, and thought leadership.
  • Sustain and grow top-line revenue in collaboration with Regional and Business Center leadership to support healthcare growth across Northern California and the US West.
  • Nurtures existing client relationships and proactively pursues opportunities for new business through strong client relationships and market awareness.
  • Lead Healthcare Project Delivery
  • Own the successful delivery of complex healthcare projects-from early planning through construction-balancing quality, schedule, budget, and client satisfaction.
  • Lead mechanical design for healthcare facilities, including HVAC, plumbing, and medical gas systems, ensuring compliance with HCAI/OSHPD, NFPA 99, ASHRAE 170, FGI, and California building codes.
  • Define project scope, goals, and deliverables in collaboration with stakeholders, including healthcare providers, regulatory bodies, and internal teams
  • Develop detailed project plans, timelines, and resource allocations to ensure successful execution
  • Work collaboratively with project leaders, architects, design partners, peers, contractors, and other project stakeholders to define project objectives, deliverables, and success metrics, and develop innovative and practical solutions, and meet the project's conditions of satisfaction.
  • Ensure compliance with healthcare regulations, quality standards, and best practices
  • Engage with external partners, including vendors and regulatory agencies, to ensure compliance and integration of project design.
  • Establish strong relationships with healthcare providers, vendors, and internal stakeholders to ensure design alignment with project objectives.
  • Conduct site visits and inspections to ensure project requirements are met.
  • Prepare detailed design documents, specifications, and reports.
  • Applies strong mechanical engineering skills, experience, and knowledge to the design and oversight of the design for building projects.
  • Manages and plans the production resources and workflow to produce the design documentation, drawings, and calculations required for mechanical engineering projects.
  • Act as QC reviewer on projects.
  • Effectively delegates work to production support staff.
  • Develop and deliver project-related client presentations.
  • Mentor, Lead, and Inspire Teams
  • Mentor and develop engineers and project leaders, fostering a culture of technical excellence, accountability, and professional development.
  • Provide guidance on project planning, workload forecasting, and resource management.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of project delivery processes and technical standards.
  • Advance Technical Excellence
  • Stay current with evolving healthcare regulations, technologies, and best practices-and help integrate them into Stantec's standards and processes.
  • Proactively pursues additional knowledge in related disciplines through continuous technical leadership learning.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of Health Sector Engineering specifications, technical documentation, and standards in collaboration with other technical resources within Stantec.
  • Promote innovative, sustainable, and resilient design solutions that enhance patient, staff, and facility outcomes.

Your Capabilities and Credentials
  • 12+ years of experience in delivering mechanical engineering designs within the healthcare sector, with a proven track record of successful project delivery
  • Proven success leading complex healthcare projects and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, and ability to navigate complex organizational structures and build consensus.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to navigate complex project aspects, assess variables, and develop reliable design solutions independently.
  • Exceptional leadership and team-building skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate a diverse group of engineers.

  • Strong understanding and application of project management principles.
  • Strong knowledge of applicable codes and standards, including California building codes, OSHPD regulations, IMC, IPC, NFPA, IBC, and ASHRAE requirements.
  • Strong knowledge of NFPA 99, ASHRAE 170, and the FGI Guidelines as they specifically apply to Hospitals, ambulatory surgical centers, and medical office buildings.
  • Exceptional technical understanding and working knowledge of building systems, including HVAC and Plumbing.
  • Ability to develop concepts and ideas and evolve them into coordinated project deliverables.
  • Experience identifying and managing project risks and potential scope changes.
  • Functional knowledge of Revit and BIM workflows.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Bluebeam.

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in a related field
  • Minimum 12+ years of relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience, and/or demonstrated skills.
  • 12+ years of OSHPD experience preferred.
  • Professional Engineering (PE) is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with Lean/IPD, Design-Build, or Design-Assist delivery methods is a plus.
  • Familiarity with major healthcare systems is required.
