Senior Application Engineer - GIS and MV Switchgear Proposals

The Electrification & Automation (EA) Business Unit is seeking highly qualified and energetic Application Engineers for the Proposals team. This role is located in Wendell, NC with remote possibilities.

You'll make an impact by:

The Application Engineer plays a key role in driving business growth within Electrification & Automation (EA) by developing complex technical and commercial proposals that best align with customer needs while maintaining competitive pricing. This role works closely with Siemens Sales to prepare offers focused on pad-mounted, Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS), and Medium Voltage (MV) metal-enclosed air insulated switchgear solutions, supporting customers across the data center, industrial, utility, and construction markets. The Engineer is responsible for supporting the technical, contractual, and commercial aspects of proposals to ensure alignment with Siemens' portfolio, Business Unit objectives, and management requirements.
  • Review of Customer specifications, commercial/technical documents, product requirements.
  • Identify and define preliminary scope of work for a complete solution that fits the Customer specifications.
  • Prepare layout and single line drawings at a minimum, to demonstrate the idea of the intended scope of work.
  • Collaborate with Engineers within the Business Unit to generate technical solutions for the Siemens suite of products.
  • Prepare RFQ packages for third party products (transformers, battery systems, HMI cabinets, control boxes, etc) and work closely with Procurement team to secure the quotations.
  • Perform quote evaluations of all the quotations received and make technical recommendations to the design and the vendor choices.
  • Develop the cost model for the quotation using product configurators and secure approvals from the senior management.
  • Prepare Customer-facing proposal (proposal document) for Medium Voltage Switchgear and associated third party products (when applicable).
  • Engage in Customer discussions by supporting the Business Development and Sales teams.
  • Collaborate with internal departments and Sales teams to negotiate and secure contracts.
  • Work closely with the Project Management (PMO) team for an efficient and effective handover of the project from the Bid Phase to the Project execution phase, upon winning the project.

Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering
  • 5+ years engineering experience in an EPC, engineering, manufacturing, utility, industrial corporate environment or similar
  • Ability to analyze single-line diagrams, and apply appropriate product offerings to meet customer expectations in a cost-effective and timely manner; able to propose alternative solutions that optimize profitability while meeting customer requirements
  • Working financial knowledge to understand and support ongoing business planning, as well as product and project lifecycle management processes
  • Strong collaboration, leadership, and decision-making skills in a team environment, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple, simultaneous tasks while maintaining a high level of customer service
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to effectively and accurately interact with both internal stakeholders and external customers
  • Ability to identify market trends and apply insights by working closely with Marketing and Technology teams to develop and justify solutions that address gaps
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools and willingness to learn product configuration and pricing applications
  • Travel required: less than 10%

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Familiarity with ANSI, IEEE, UL, and NEMA standards for power distribution applications, particularly related to Medium Voltage switchgear and transformer applications and industry best practices
  • Experience in the design and application of electrical distribution products, with a focus on medium voltage metal-clad and metal-enclosed switchgear and/or transformer applications
  • Ability to evaluate and interpret single-line diagrams, schematics, relay protection and control schemes, communication network diagrams, and related engineering documentation
  • Experience with electrical and 2D layout tools such as AutoCAD, Visio, or similar platforms
  • 3-5 years of engineering experience within an EPC, engineering, manufacturing, utility, or industrial environment, or similar (advanced degree may substitute for a portion of experience)
  • Work authorization that permits employment within the United States
  • Currently based in or willing to relocate to the Raleigh/Wendell, NC area

The pay range for this position is $74,970 - $128,520 annually. The actual wage offered may be lower or higher depending on budget and candidate experience, knowledge, skills, qualifications, and premium geographic location.
