Full Job Description
As a Senior Application Engineer (HVAC), you will provide expert-level application engineering support for commercial and institutional HVAC projects across the United States. You will lead complex applications, system optimization, value engineering, and strategic project opportunities while working closely with Sales, representatives, consulting engineers, contractors, and customers. The role will also serve as a Technical Subject Matter Expert (SME) for the USA Application Engineering team, support technical education and enablement of the USA Rep network, and contribute to the development of engineers through the USA Armstrong Graduate Program. Specific Duties / Essential Functions: Sales Application Engineering - Serve as a technical authority for complex HVAC and hydronic applications, providing expert guidance on system design, equipment selection, controls, and optimization. - Lead technical development of strategic, high-value, and technically complex opportunities from concept through project conversion. - Develop optimized and value-engineered solutions focused on energy efficiency, reliability, first cost, and lifecycle performance. - Provide expert application guidance for central heating and cooling plants, pumping systems, heat exchangers, variable-flow systems, and system controls. - Evaluate drawings, specifications, equipment schedules, P&IDs, and control schematics to identify design risks and optimization opportunities. - Lead technical reviews, specification compliance, alternative solutions, and competitive differentiation. - Engage with Sales, representatives, consultants, contractors, and customers through design reviews, technical workshops, site visits, and project discussions. - Drive application engineering process improvements, standardization, and best practices. Rep Enablement & Technical Training - Lead technical education and application training for the USA Rep network. - Lead strategic product introduction and adoption, ensuring effective application of new products and solutions. - Develop and deliver application-focused workshops, technical presentations, and educational content. - Strengthen Rep technical capability to identify, develop, and support engineered and system-level opportunities. Technical SME & Team Development - Serve as Technical SME for the USA Application Engineering team, providing guidance on complex applications and technical decisions. - Mentor and develop Application Engineers to strengthen overall team technical capability. - Support the USA Armstrong Graduate Program through structured technical development, mentorship, and practical project experience. - Promote knowledge sharing, engineering best practices, and continuous technical development across the team. What We're Looking For Education & Experience - Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related engineering discipline. - 10-15 years of relevant HVAC and application engineering experience. - Strong experience in commercial HVAC, hydronic systems, central plants, pumping systems, heat exchangers, controls, system optimization, and value engineering. - Demonstrated experience supporting complex engineered projects and customer-facing technical discussions. - Experience working with consulting engineers, contractors, manufacturers' representatives, and Sales teams. - Experience mentoring and developing engineers or early-career technical professionals preferred. - Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred. - Active membership in professional organizations such as ASHRAE or the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE) preferred. - Professional credentials such as LEED AP, Certified Energy Manager (CEM), or equivalent industry-recognized certifications are preferred. Technical & Professional Skills - Expert understanding of commercial HVAC and hydronic system design, controls, and system optimization. - Strong ability to interpret mechanical drawings, specifications, P&IDs, equipment schedules, and control schematics. - Strong system-level engineering, problem-solving, and value-engineering capability. - Ability to independently lead complex applications and provide technical direction. - Strong customer-facing communication, presentation, and technical education skills. - Strong mentoring, coaching, and knowledge-transfer capability. - Ability to work effectively across Sales, Engineering, Product teams, representatives, consultants, contractors, and customers.
