The Opportunity

The Ottawa Senators are seeking an energetic, detail-oriented professional to join our Finance team as a Senior Accountant, Hockey Operations Finance. This is an excellent opportunity to join an NHL franchise at a mid-level position which will allow the candidate to become fully engaged in the business of a major league sports team.

Reporting to the Senior Director, Finance, you will serve as the primary finance partner to Hockey Operations and will be responsible for financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, player payroll administration, league reporting and financial analysis for both the Ottawa Senators and Belleville Senators. The successful candidate will provide leadership in hockey finance, drive process improvements and support strategic decision making across the organization.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare accurate monthly financial reporting in accordance with established internal deadlines
  • Maintain account reconciliations to support consolidated financial statements
  • Prepare monthly variance analysis to budget and update rolling forecast in close collaboration with Hockey Operations
  • Provide support to Hockey Operations through analysis of results, outcomes, and key performance measurements
  • Lead the annual budgeting process for Hockey Operations
  • Prepare wages and applicable escrow and tax withholdings for all hockey players according to their contract on a semi-monthly basis
  • Identify, develop and implement process improvements, internal controls and accounting best practices
  • Assist in preparation of regular reporting to the National Hockey League
  • Support annual financial statement audit process
  • Drive process enhancements to streamline operations and boost efficiencies
  • Participate in various other special projects as required
  • Other duties as assigned by the Senior Director, Finance or Vice President, Finance & Administration


Qualifications (what we look for)
  • CPA designation with progressive accounting and financial reporting experience (experience within professional sports, entertainment or a complex operating environment is considered an asset)
  • Knowledge of ASPE
  • Minimum of 3 years of related accounting experience in a similar role
  • Strong technical ability and ability to work independently and find solutions to complex issues
  • Advanced Excel formula skills and experience with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central is an asset
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills and an ability to communicate effectively and professionally with all levels of the business
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Ability to meet tight timelines and work under pressure, while adapting to changing priorities
  • Ability to work independently and equally well in a team
  • Bilingual (French/ English) would be considered an asset

This role falls within a base salary range of $73,900 to $113,100 annually, consistent with the organization's established salary ranges. Salary ranges are determined through a wide variety of factors including but not limited to market data, internal equity, education, relevant experience, knowledge, and applicable skillset.
