Job Summary

The Senior Accountant is a hybrid role that combines accounting responsibilities with financial planning, reporting and analysis and comprehensive grant accounting. This position is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, preparing financial statements and variance analysis, managing grant budgets and compliance, supporting financial planning process and providing insights on financial results.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (the % should be listed for 3-5 major key areas of responsibility)

Corporate Accounting and Financial Reporting
• Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for corporate, nonprofit and related entities

  • Ensure accounting methods are under GAAP and that governmental reporting requirements are followed accurately

• Maintain general ledger accuracy, including journal entries, allocations, intercompany reconciliations, working capital, real estate transactions and eliminations.
• Maintain supporting schedules for assets, liabilities, and depreciation

  • Ensure proper documentation and backup for all journal entries
  • Investigate budget variances in the financial statements
  • Facilitate relationships with groups around the organization and assist the Controller with providing financial analysis to those groups.
  • Act as a resource for senior management during budget preparation

• Prepare audit schedules at fiscal year-end
• Assist in audit consolidation and elimination of affiliated entities

  • Coordinate the completion of special accounting projects for management
  • This position supervises the accountant

Grant Accounting and Compliance
• Maintain full grant accounting lifecycle, including setup, tracking, reporting and closeout

  • Record grant-related revenues and expenses in compliance with funder agreements and allowable cost guidelines.
  • Prepare grant budgets and spending plans in partnership with Advantage Services and Resource Development.
  • Prepare reimbursement requests and financial reports for federal, state, local and philanthropic grants.
  • Track restricted funds and ensure proper recognition under GAAP and donor restrictions
  • Monitor grant spend-down rates, timelines and compliance deliverables
  • Support risk assessments for grant compliance and audit readiness
  • Maintain and improve internal controls related to accounting, grants and planning processes.

Budgeting and Variance Analysis

  • Support the annual budgeting process, including assisting in the development of department, grant and organizational budgets.
  • Conduct budget to actual analysis and partner with budget owners to understand and explain variances.
  • Provide financial insights and recommendations to leadership to support decision making
  • Assist with creating financial dashboards and performance metrics.
  • Coordinate with the treasury team on restricted funds, reserves and grant cash movements.
  • Provide training to various staff upon request

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Extensive knowledge of GAAP
• Strong understanding of corporate accounting principles, including consolidations, intercompany eliminations, and financial reporting
• Proficiency in financial analysis and forecasting with the ability to interpret complex data
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities, with attention to detail and accuracy
• Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, to present financial information to non-financial stakeholders
• Advanced Excel sills
• Ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment

Education and Other Requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
• Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or related field required.
• 5+ years of experience with all aspects of accrual accounting through financial statements and audit preparation
• Experience with grant accounting (federal, state, local, philanthropic)
• Budgeting, forecasting and financial modeling experience preferred
• Ability to maintain tight and effective internal control procedures
• Possess a high level of accuracy and detail orientation
• Demonstrated experience working within diverse communities, which include people of various ages, genders, sexual orientations, national origins, income levels, ability levels, religious affiliations, races, and languages
• Ability to work independently and cross-functionally
• Excellent customer service, organization, and both written and oral communication skills
• Ability to manage multiple duties while adhering to established deadlines

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS
• Experience in Non-Profit
• Experience with Yardi (ERP system)
• Experience in property accounting or real estate accounting
• Experience in Public Accounting
• Certified Public Accounting (CPA) license
