Senior Accountant - Department of Finance

The City and County of Denver offers competitive pay commensurate with education and experience. New hires are typically brought into the organization between $68,773 and $91,124. We also offer generous benefits for full-time employees which include but are not limited to:

This is a time-limited position with an expected end date of 6/30/2028, and the potential to be extended.

Location & Schedule

The City and County of Denver supports a hybrid workplace model. Employees work where needed, at a job site several days a week and off-site as needed. This position reports to our offices at 201 W. Colfax Ave in Denver three days a week and telecommutes remotely at a designated workplace within the State of Colorado the remaining days.

The Department of Finance (DOF) is responsible for the fiscal health of the city. The DOF leads fiscal analysis and guidance, property assessments, budgeting, accounting functions, enforcement of fiscal policies, practices and procedures for the entire City and County of Denver. The DOF fulfills the state statutory responsibilities for tax assessment and collection. DOF also manages the City's debt portfolio and investment portfolio. The DOF commits to delivering these services through a financial structure that reflects the best practices of both the public and private sectors. This commitment promotes better service, enhanced performance measures, maximum accountability, and improved business processes.

About The Office of the Controller

The Office of the Controller keeps the City's ledgers and books, manages payroll and accounts payable; establishes and enforces Citywide financial policies, procedures and internal controls; produces the financial reports including the annually audited financial statements of the City; and works with agencies to improve financial skills. The Controller's Office is a dynamic environment that seeks innovative ideas that promote effective, efficient, and accountable government while maintaining the highest level of integrity.

The Department of Finance is seeking a Senior Accountant to join our Controller's Office in the Financial Services Division. In this role as the Senior Accountant, you will be challenged as an experienced financial professional to provide financial management services throughout the entire operation cycles of multiple City agencies. You will be expected to provide various services including: accounting, procurement/payable, and budget monitoring. The work will be fluid, dynamic, and require the highest level of customer service to our internal clients.

Specifically, as a Senior Accountant you will:
  • Monitor and track expenditures and revenues, analyze financial performance, prepare financial reports, forecast expenditures, guide management in fiscal compliance and analytical planning, and anticipate potential problems
  • Prepare customized accounting reports, spreadsheets, and financial statements, research and compile data, create quarterly and annual reports, and assist client groups with data submissions and compliance reporting
  • Support complex agency and department purchasing activities involving multiple accounts or excessive costs, ensure assets are received and accounted for on master inventory list, and analyze purchasing transactions and functions
  • Manage and oversee grant processes for client groups, review grant applications and terms for financial impacts to the City, audit grant records and transactions, research and analyze expenditures and revenues, create annual grant reports, and close out grants within financial systems
  • Reconcile complex discrepancies with regard to journal and accounting transactions, review, research, and analyze reporting errors, create reports and compile supporting documents for corrections within accounting systems, and guide management through corrective actions
  • Conduct special projects with regard to financial transactions, research and analyze accounting issues, perform complex financial calculations, and create reports and compile supporting documents for management review
  • Ensure compliance and maintain fiscal accountability with regard to rules, regulations, standards, policies, and procedures in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles
  • Work with stakeholders both internal and external to the City, respond to inquiries, provide specialized and complex information and assistance with regard to specific accounting transactions, and work with client groups to resolve accounting discrepancies and guide decision making

Required Minimum Qualifications

Education requirement: Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration.
Experience Requirement: Three (3) years of professional level accounting experience reconciling accounting discrepancies, analyzing expenditures, and preparing financial reports.
Education/Experience Equivalency: No substitution of experience for education is permitted.

Additional appropriate education may be substituted for experience requirements.
