As a Scientist at BeOne Institute, you will play a key role in enabling cutting-edge research at our San Carlos, CA site by delivering high-quality recombinant proteins for a broad range of applications, including tool antibodies, enzymes, screening reagents, and structural biology studies. You will develop and implement innovative approaches to improve the quality, scalability, turnaround time, and success of recombinant protein production workflows. In addition, you will contribute creatively to research programs across the site, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to advance novel scientific initiatives and enable new discoveries.
Essential Functions of the Job: - Design, express, and purify proteins utilizing bacterial and mammalian expression systems.
- Produce a wide range of protein reagents, including antibodies, enzymes, transcription factors, membrane proteins, and others.
- Generate QC data and maintain reference lots when appropriate (experience with anSEC and LC/MS a plus).
- Keep track of lot IDs, plasmids, and protein inventories.
- Communicate progress through regular updates while proactively identifying challenges and proposing solutions.
- Collaborate with cross-disciplinary or cross-functional teams and drive innovation within and beyond the Institute.
- Contribute to operational activities to support strategic objectives of the BeOne Institute at the San Carlos site.
- Maintain impeccable ELN records.
- Stay current on state-of-the-art protein production and purification technologies and methods as well as project-relevant literature.
Supervisory Responsibilities: - May be a contact for external CRO partners when needed
- May provide matrix or line-function leadership for project teams when needed
Computer Skills: - Candidates are expected to maintain an electronic notebook to a high level of data quality
- Familiarity with Unicorn software is required
- Familiarity with AlphaFold and/or other protein design tools is a plus
Required Qualifications: - Degree in biology, chemistry, engineering, or other related field (Ph.D. + 2 years of experience, MS + 5 years of experience, or BS + 8 years of experience)
- Deep expertise in bacterial and mammalian expression systems
- Deep experience in protein purification utilizing affinity chromatography, ion exchange chromatography, size exclusion chromatography, and other methods, including the use of AKTA FPLC systems
- Experience with construct design and synthesis
- Ability to operate effectively in a highly collaborative, fast-paced, and interdisciplinary research environment, and to integrate multi-disciplinary approaches to solve complex biological problems
- Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to clearly articulate complex scientific concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences
- Be able to work on-site in San Carlos, CA
Preferred Qualifications:- Experience in a drug discovery setting
- Experience with endotoxin-free protein production and endotoxin-removal workflows
- Working knowledge of protein structure determination methods, including X-ray crystallography (XRC), cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM), and/or biomolecular NMR (bioNMR)
- Experience with HPLC and mass spectrometry
- Experience with insect cell, yeast, cell-free, or other alternative protein expression systems

Salary Range: $136,600.00 - $170,700.00 annually
