Scientist I

Department: 55 - ECO Process Development

Employment Type: Full Time

Location: Redwood City, CA

Reporting To: Ryan Reeves

Compensation: $128,000 - $142,000 / year

Description

The Scientist I is a part of the Process Chemistry department and responsible for process design and optimization for enzymatic synthesis of therapeutic RNA oligonucleotides using immobilized enzymes. The process development team within Process Chemistry is developing a cutting-edge synthesis technology for the generation or RNAi based compounds. The individual will have the opportunity to pioneer novel processes while developing enzymatic and oligonucleotide skill sets. This role is on-site, full-time and will be based in Redwood City.

Key Responsibilities
• Development of synthesis and downstream processes parameters for the generation of therapeutically relevant compounds using enzymatic approaches.
• Screening of different starting raw materials for the process input and identifying commercially viable supplies for the process steps developed.
• Development of unit operations at the bench and pilot-scale such as nanofiltration, purification, ultrafiltration and depth filtration.
• Providing troubleshooting support to commercial and project management.
• Leading multidisciplinary teams, providing project tasked direction, and communicating results and challenges to key stakeholders.
• Supervising technical support staff.
• Identifying and evaluating new technologies for ECO synthesis processes.

Skills, Knowledge & Expertise

The essential requirements of the job include:
  • Ph.D. in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, or related discipline with 0-3 years of relevant industrial experience; or B.S. with at least 10 years relevant industrial experience.
  • Strong knowledge of chemistry, chemical engineering, enzyme physiology coupled with practical knowledge of process engineering flow applications.
  • Experimental design and data analysis capabilities including Design of Experiments (DOE).
  • Unicorn software, cGMP regulation understanding and flow-based reactor system use is ideal.

Additional experience that would be valuable for this role includes:
  • Development and transfer of enzyme-catalyzed processes to manufacturing scale
  • Experience in process development and/or scale-up in pharma GMP facility
  • Detailed understanding and experience of flow chemistry process development and/or scale-up for production of pharmaceuticals or fine chemicals
