Description GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:Advocate for students and work with other individuals and organizations to promote the academic, career, personal, and social development of children and youth. Help students better understand and deal with social, behavioral, and personal problems. Emphasize preventive and developmental counseling to enhance students' personal, social, and academic growth and to provide students with the life skills needed to deal with problems before they worsen and to enhance students' personal, social, and academic growth.

- Assesses student abilities, interests, and talents to develop realistic academic and career goals;
- Renders assistance to students in classroom guidance, group and individual counseling sessions;
- Assists students by appraising their interests, aptitudes, abilities, educational achievements, and personal development;
- Assists students in course selection, in accordance with available data, to enable them to utilize their abilities more fully as they move toward more realistic goals in education, employment, and life;
- Collects, organizes pertinent data, and maintains a cumulative record for each student;
- Maintains academic and career plans for each student;
- Submits and/or reviews referrals to the school psychologist, the school social worker, the public health nurse, or other community agencies with clearance by the principals;
- Assists in referrals, with the building administrator and school psychologist, for specialized service beyond those provided by the school;
- Confers with parents, in groups or individual sessions, concerning the total school program as it relates to the educational, vocational, and personal development of their children;
- Promotes effective public relations through participation in community activities;
- Undertakes, in a cooperative endeavor, the continuous evaluation of; the nature and scope of the school counseling services; the functioning of school counseling as an integral part of the total educational program; the effectiveness of school counseling services;
- Performs related work as assigned.
Qualifications: KSA's, Education KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:Knowledge in human behavior and performance; individual differences in ability, personality, and interests; learning and motivation; psychological research methods; and the assessment and treatment of behavioral and affective disorders. Possess a strong desire to help others and possess the ability to inspire respect, trust, and confidence. Demonstrate command of Standard English, both spoken and written. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, memos and reports. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of teachers, parents, students and the general public. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:Required: Master's Degree. Postgraduate Professional Certificate with endorsement school counselor.
Preferred: Three or more years of recent successful teaching or counselor experience at the secondary level. Recent work experience using an automated student information system.

Physical requirements and Disclaimer PHYSICAL CONDITIONS:Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact. Frequent contact is made with individuals from other internal departments for purposes of exchanging factual information which requires judgment or interpretation/ Conducts work in a sitting position; however, job requires frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping and light lifting of up to 30 lbs. unassisted. Work is typically performed in office and classroom settings.
