The ideal candidate will be a proactive, relationship-driven safety professional with strong knowledge of construction safety programs, regulatory compliance, and field-based risk mitigation. This role oversees the implementation of Balfour Beatty's Zero Harm® program, ensuring a safe, healthy, and compliant work environment across assigned projects or facilities.
The Safety Manager will collaborate closely with Project Managers, Superintendents, trade partners, inspectors, and field teams to identify hazards, coach teams on best practices, conduct investigations, and drive continuous improvement in safety culture. This position also administers training programs, audits, incident reporting processes, and proactive risk strategies to support operational excellence and employee well-being.
Essential Functions- Zero Harm Leadership: Champion Balfour Beatty's Zero Harm® culture by promoting safe work practices, proactive hazard recognition, and accountability across all teams.
- Safety Program Management: Implement and maintain project-specific safety plans, crisis management plans, and environmental compliance requirements.
- Training & Education: Develop and deliver training programs, including new employee orientation, annual refresher training, task-specific instruction, subcontractor training, and first-aid programs.
- Field Inspections & Audits: Conduct regular jobsite inspections, safety audits, and NC STAR or regulatory compliance reviews; document findings and coordinate corrective actions.
- Incident Response: Lead incident investigations, root-cause analyses, workers' compensation reporting, and follow-up mitigation strategies; maintain accurate incident logs and OSHA recordables.
- Preconstruction Support: Participate in preconstruction meetings to review Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) and ensure safety requirements are incorporated into project planning.
- Regulatory Compliance: Stay current on OSHA, environmental, and local/state regulations; communicate updates to field teams and ensure compliance.
- Documentation & Reporting: Prepare safety reports, audit findings, monthly metrics, and safety-related bid documents; maintain documentation according to company standards.
- Environmental Support: Assist project teams with sediment/erosion control, environmentally responsible practices, and field safety integration.
- Customer Relations & Culture: Build strong relationships with internal teams, subcontractors, and clients while promoting teamwork, leadership, and continuous improvement.
Minimum Requirements- Bachelor's degree in Safety & Environmental Health, Construction Management, Engineering, or related field.
- 5+ years of commercial construction safety experience.
- OSHA 30 certification.
- CSP or CHST certification.
- 2+ years of supervisory or training experience.
- Strong knowledge of OSHA standards, environmental regulations, and construction safety best practices.
- Demonstrated ability to conduct safety audits, incident investigations, and compliance reviews.
- Strong communication, documentation, and relationship-building skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and standard communication tools.
Preferred Experience- OSHA Outreach Trainer certification.
- Experience supporting NC STAR programs or similar compliance frameworks.
- Experience in workers' compensation case management and return-to-work programs.
